What did Wizards learn from Essentials?

Concerning Fluff and Cruch I play with two groups. Both groups I think pretty regular people, love fantasy, have kids, jobs, etc, like blowing stuff to smithereens and are not really sold on the whole Roleplaying thing, they prefer dungeons to aristocratic events in there D&D. So, that being...

    Monte Cook - Racial Importance

All this talk about options and modules really confuses me. D&D has a brand, in D&D elves and dwarves need to mean something. A D&D where one person plays an elf that has strong effect on the mechanics, and the other person playing has no effect doesn't make any sense. On the other hand this...

Pathfinder 1E Will Paizo be the Good Guy? (humor)

They weren't pathfinder players, they were D&D players. Its pretty clear that WOTC changed the essence of the game with 4e, Pathinder is just a 3.5 clone with some extra powers. Its not unusual for D&D players to want an update to their game without changing its very soul.

    Detect Evil => Detect Corruption

Still dont like it. SHould be banned. And I LOVE alignment. But the spell is an adventure ruiner. Maybe if they beat the person and restrained him Id allow somethin like that. Needs some way they couldnt just do it to everyone.

D&D 5E (2014) Should we let the 'Wierd Wizard Show' begin in 5e?

Lame Poll. Wheres the option for "the game is sufficiently balanced as is, and if you notice something that disturbing balancewise, you and your dm are doing it wrong" A 1st level wizard can't hold a candle to a 1st level fighter, either one to one or against encounters. At 11th level, the...

D&D 4E An Olive Branch to 4e Fans: Some Things 5e Should Take From 4e

I agree with you on all points except two: Alignment is important, gives something to roleplay about, gives meaning, and should have some mechanical effect in the game. That doesnt mean we need detect evil, but when paladins break their code or druids raze forests, there should be effects...

The core mechanic -- am I doing it wrong?

I wouldnt think its as tight of a relation as you might think. I almost always use modules. But am firmly in the "DM is god and can fudge all he wants as long as its making the game is more fun, and he often double checks thats true with the players" camp. I started off making my own worlds...

The core mechanic -- am I doing it wrong?

Understood. I hope that 5e will be able to support BOTH styles of play, and I consider it somewhat possible. Groups and even adventures shift from time to time, focussing on combat and tactics one minte, and skills and imagination the next. I want a game that supports both. this is off topic...

The core mechanic -- am I doing it wrong?

I was thinking he would have hated my favorite character Babo Madballs the Gnome Jester. Babo had a pet rock "Bill" whom I painted, and brought to every session. Babo would often ask Bill what he should do next, he'd use Bill as a weapon (even if he only caused 1 damage), Babo would sometimes...

    D&D 5E (2014) Arcana Unearthed effects on 5e?

I've noticed a couple things from Monte Cookes 3.5 Arcana Unearthed that have been hinted at being in D&D Next. Just in case anyone hasn't heard of it, Arcana Unearthed was an Alternate Players Handbook for 3e, that later got expanded into a complete system Arcana Evolved(AE). I definitely...

Ability Modifiers and the +1/2 Effect

I couldnt care less about this effect. I understand it, just very very very low on the concern scale on how to make the game more fun. Then again Im not opposed to a solution to your concerns :) I'd like to find some way to de-emphasize stats. I mean really, people pay waaaay to much...

    My support for healer classes

Healers were always "optional". I had many campaigns where there was no cleric, or someone picked a paladin, or they bought healing poitions. I have no idea where this "you need a healer" idea came from, but I never experienced it.

The core mechanic -- am I doing it wrong?

I think the new gamer/old gamer isn't really as big of a divide, or at least its not a hard one to bridge. Rather I think the divide is between people who play D&D with friends and those who play organized or competitive play. Its a lot easier to trust and give leeway to your bud who is just...

    Attacks per Round

I thought MANY fighter attacks was a great way to balance against POWERFUL wizard spells. For me that system was win win, fighters get to do what they do best (slice and dice), and wizards get to blow things up once a round. I also thought cleave was waaaaaaaaaaaaay more fun for my players...

The core mechanic -- am I doing it wrong?

I would to. There are simple ways to do this, (Dexterity), skills (acrobatics, jump etc) and conversation with the DM ("I look at the chandalier and think about jumping, do I think I have a good chance of doing it? ") Consistency and learning how a DM arbitrates helps. For example I might...

The core mechanic -- am I doing it wrong?

I my experience with rules light, and rules heavy systems the more detailed and clear rules are, the less imaginative and fun the game is. It deeply effects my players and the way they speak and act at the game table. The more detailed and clear every single thing is, the less players just dream...

A new Edition/Iteration of D&D is really necessary?

Just look at the success of Pathfinder. I play pathfinder, but Im really hungry for a REAL update. Not just a couple powers tacked on. And 4e wasnt an update but rather an entirely different game with different priorities and core values. So that leaves a lot of players sorta stranded. Add...

What Does Your Perfect Edition Look Like?

Mechanically - Monte Cookes Arcana Evolved with the fluff of 2nd edition AD&D Simple rules but complex spell, power, and other action descriptions, that bring the mystery back to what specifically a power does and the responsibility back to the DM to make the game incredible. Think the...

    Class Balance - why?

I agree with you. That is fine. Call it whatever you want. Personally I am perfectly happy with the balance (fairness) that has existed in the game from 1e to 3e. The kind of balance (fairness) that made D&D what it is today. For the sake of unity, I agree that the balance (fairness) should...

D&D 5E (2014) Drop the rotating spotlight model of niche protection for 5e

You haven't been doing it wrong. I love taking classes/archetypes and changing them to suit my needs. Thats the beauty of archetypes as classes, you have a strong idea that shapes and gives spirit to an other wise lifeless mechanical class, and players can STILL change that default archetype...
