Oh standard action, right, even brilliant. Fighter attacks the barbarian, the barbarian hits back and hurts the fighter badly, the fighter cant get healed this round and must lower his SR next round(meaning he can only do a single move action, and realistically speaking thats a 5ft step away...

It should be fairly simple. He gains EXP as a ECL 18 PC(and since the rest of the party is ECL 16, thats not much, and the rest will easily catch up to him), and when he finally does gain a level simply implement the buyback rule, he loses XP, and loses one LA.

So, say, a level 7 lantern archon cleric, ECL 10, no magical items except ioun stones, technically no armor or weapons either, must take eschew materials or cannot cast spells with material components(and cannot cast spells with expensive material components till epic levels), cannot turn undead...

The simple solution is not to allow LA buyoff at character generation, or to allow it immediately when someone gains a template, otherwise you are effectively gaining the benefits for nothing. An example where a ECL 15 PC is made, he takes the half-celestial template, and "buys" it...

Pretty much every DM ive seen says "Screw it, SR only affects hostile spells". Seriously the whole mechanic with lowering SR, having it stay down for an entire turn, blah blah blah just makes it a huge pain in the ass, more un-necessary things to keep track of.
