D&D General What spells should be on the rangers list?

What I'm hearing from you is that you think the ranger needs magic, and you're trying to strengthen your opinion by saying that other people "typically" agree with you. I have never and will never see that tactic as a legitimate way to increase the validity of a personal opinion, or indeed to...

    Common Pitfalls in Game Design

And that's perfectly valid. It's just subjective and should be called out as such (preferably by the person doing it).

    Hit points as luck

Well, the poison problem is a big one if you can't bypass the luck pool. I still have a big problem with damage types being meaningless if there's no contact.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I left a game more than once. Sometimes I came back later, sometimes I didn't. I paid the social cost every time, and moved on. I'm sorry that experience has been so much harder for you personally.

    What they said @EzekielRaiden .

D&D General What spells should be on the rangers list?

They included a Ranger archetype with spellcasting (the wildborn) specifically for those like you who apparently see a spell-less ranger as a fighter with a nice coat of paint.

D&D General What spells should be on the rangers list?

I disagree, and really see this as belittling the A5e design work. "Ranger" is not an inherently magical concept, so IMO it doesn't need spells to feel like a ranger. You personally may feel a Ranger isn't a Ranger without magic, but that is your subjective point of view. By the way, what color...

Never said they didn't. That has nothing to do with my ability to express myself regarding the practice however.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

That situation is outside of my experience. We've played at a park if if we needed a space. You can eat there. And in any case, if you venue isn't available, I'm fine putting the game off until another time, or playing online. You're not going to convince me there's ever a situation when the GM...

Not necessarily, but I've read a lot of games and many, many of the non-D&D-based ones take themselves pretty seriously.

None of the examples you're using are rules governing GM behavior. That, specifically, is what I have a problem with. I'd rather have advice.

Who is "they"? I'm talking about setting hard rules to govern GM behavior in an RPG. I'm not in favor of them.

D&D General What spells should be on the rangers list?

Again I point you to the A5e spell-less ranger. Magic is not required.

And it's obvious to me you are judging that tendency. I have no problem with the GM making those kinds of decisions as they see fit, whether or not the GM is me.

I would happily play in a game run under my principles of GMing. There is nothing I want in an RPG that I would see as an issue personally on either side of the screen.

Rules have weight, a sense that you're playing wrong if you don't do what they say. Also, in a game that can be played in many different ways like D&D and most of its relatives, having a rule governing behavior says that other ways should not be pursued, which is something of a slap in the face...

Sure, but I'm replying to someone who wants to apply this idea of hard rules for GMs to D&D and similar games. I disagree.

All of that stuff, no matter what game it's found in, is IMO best presented as advice, not rules.

    Hit points as luck

They should have renamed it to "restore vitality" or something long ago. Or changed the way hits, misses and damage are defined explicitly.

I just got specific rules for that in a recent Level Up book!
