D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

Expecting the players to be surprised about the sorcerer kings is kind of like expecting them to be surprised that Strahd is a vampire. In that case my players role played their characters being surprised though.

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

That’s in America, right? I have a friend who is a hardcore steampunk cosplayer. Anyway the reason you should use the correct labels is because if you actually want to run a medieval or steampunk D&D campaign, people won’t know what you mean. Also, steampunk enthusiasts and medievalists are...

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

The wheelchair is post-WW2, in design and technology required to make it. And it bothers me less than the impractical lack of trousers in early D&D.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

One way of dealing with preserving/defiling would be to keep track of Defilement Points for the party. These could have an effect on the large scale game - faction reputation, bastions etc (as well as making the players feel suitably guilty when they rack up a dozen Defilement Points whist...

What makes Arthurian fantasy its own genre, different from more traditional D&D-ish medieval fantasy? What are some Arthurian-style plots?

That's a definite yes but. In this case, there was no Kingdom of Cornwall at that time so Tristan and Isolde could not have occurred in that historical period, even though it takes pace during the time of Arthur. Really, you are talking about the Arthur stories taking place in a fantasy version...

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

That's one of the things that makes it not steampunk. That outfit is early 20th century, not late 19th (he has no hat!). That's typical of Eberron (and always was if you ignored WAR and read the text). Beyond Eberron there are other even more modern fashion touches in the art, but modern isn't...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you run a game in Ravnica?

That’s why WotC say there is no canon. The setting is yours, do what you want with it.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you run a game in Ravnica?

True, but a ruined urban landscape is at least cosmetically different from the usual D&D landscape, and the players get their guild special abilities to play with. And you can trot out the large selection of Ravnica themed monsters that are in the book. Not all D&D players want plots. Some just...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you run a game in Ravnica?

One thing to consider: some parts of Ravnica are completely ruined. So if you want a simple monster bashing game free of guild politics you could just send your PCs out into the ruins to kill monsters and recover loot. Hay, you could do Escape From New York!

D&D 5E (2014) How do you run a game in Ravnica?

If I'm not excited about a campaign idea myself, I can't expect players to be excited about it. I might be excited about two or three ideas at once, but five is more like "you choose, I don't care". When it comes to setting books, if I'm not already excited by the idea, I don't buy them.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you run a game in Ravnica?

With any setting that is unfamiliar, you have to sell it to the players with an elevator pitch to tell them why it's cool. Just because a setting has appeared in other media it still needs the DM to sell why its cool in D&D.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you run a game in Ravnica?

Ten seems rather high, but even if you don't see it happening now, its a pretty standard set up of for a cyberpunk game*. Which is where I suggested starting when looking for inspiration for Ravnica. *Also see: Alien: Earth.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you run a game in Ravnica?

And in the real world everything is controlled by corporations. It's still possible to do other things, and have the corporations as a background detail rather than the main story. Chaotic Evil PCs have always existed in D&D. I remember back in 1st edition Assassins were extremely popular...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

D&D is Americana. It doesn't exist in a cultural vacuum. Other countries have their own take (e.g. Warhammer).

Nope. They can exist just fine as monster types. A great many things exist in D&D worlds that cannot be PCs.

What are you reading in 2025?

I wouldn't not read Triplanetary. As I remember (I read them 40 years ago, so I am a little hazy) it was one of the better ones.
