    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

What my players are familiar with often seems strange to me. Doctor Strangelove? “We can’t fight in here, this is the war room!” Treasure Island? “I’ve only seen the muppet version”.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

80% of my players are under 40, and quote Monty Python fairly regularly. Although that may say more about my players and my game than anything else.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

No one needs create food and drink. I conjure a flock of turkeys and fireball them. Roast turkey for dozens. Ice Storm and there is plenty of water for everyone. If I have this magic running out of food and water is nonsensical.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

That’s completely contrary to how I see D&D. It’s first and foremost a fiction simulator. If a spell can be used in a way not specified in the rules, the players are not only allowed, but actively encouraged to get creative. D&D is not chess. The rules are there to support the fiction. And...

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

Why not? If I can magically create a ball of fire, surely I can magically create a ball of drinking water? I thought you were a simulationist? This “supply” seems hard-core gamist, making no sense in the fiction of the world. I get a metal funnel and put it in a bottle. Then I cast Ray of Frost...

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

Players play to enjoy themselves. An activity is “worth their while” if they enjoy doing it.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

My concussion from that is that Level Up! Is no different from 5e. It’s not a logistics based game, nor is it trying to be. Logistics can easily be solved by magic - as you would expect them to be in any world with abundant magic.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

And how would such a “logistics meter” function without removing all spells and class abilities that enable it to be bypassed? Not to mention implicit abilities. If a ranger can't find food in the wilderness, what's the point of them?

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

well liked? I can’t think of anything that fits that description, and the only ones I’ve played that are enjoyable are FASA Star Trek and a couple of Star Wars based games, none of which are remotely transferable to D&D sailing ships in space. (And are several orders of magnitude more...

Maybe we should have this as a tag, so we can avoid it for the more interesting games?

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I think we are seeing a lot of pitchfork sharpening going on here. We saw with the truly excellent Ravenloft update that people will reject anything that's different, and that it's impossible to not be different, since both the rules and society have changed. Now, WotC did do a bad job with...

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

In order to make logistics matter you need to strip out a heck of a lot of spells, and turn the game low magic. People tend to get very very angry if their toys are taken away to appease a minority. And rangers become an "I win" button. You would need to remove them too. Much better to start...

D&D General Why wouldn't you run a Dark Sun game?

I think you are missing something. Remember Dark Sun was largely based on the John Carter stories. John Carter was a largely heroic figure who fought bad guys and won. No reason you can’t play Dark Sun that way.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

That’s not really the point I was making. I’m just refuting “the fiction requires it!” argument for why we have to have resource management. Clearly, if you enjoy resource management, you should have it in your game. As for why it was originally included, like so many things that was down to...

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

This is an interesting point. The protagonist picks up an old stick/bone, wraps some cloth around it and has a light source that lasts until it is narratively (in)convenient for it to go out has been a trope since at least the 1930s (as referenced by Indiana Jones). In more modern settings it’s...

    Star Wars: Starfighter

Combined with the word “Starfighter” it sounds disturbingly like Episode 1. I think Disney are far to cautious when it comes to Star Wars, and are afraid to do anything but recycle the same old plots. The exception was Andor, and that clearly showed that the way to do Star Wars going forward...

    Star Wars: Starfighter

There have been some plot leaks around that suggest that the Bad Guys(TM) want to kidnap the kid because Plot, and Gosling is his protector/father figure. Personally, I think that sounds weak, and I don't feel optomistic about this movie.
