D&D 5E (2014) Cure Wounds: does it heal amputees?

Traditionally RAW no, and not in my campaigns either. There's the regenerate spell for that. The spell's description implies that it specifically regrows missing bits.

    D&D 5E (2014) Playing with a battlemat but without a grid

I use the zones idea from FATE. The map is divided into distinct areas and sometimes you might have to make an ability check to move between them. If we use minis, it's just to mark who is in melee with who and if someone is standing back. DM Scotty on youtube has a whole series of videos about...

D&D 5E (2014) Any authors you think should be in Appendix E but are not?

Yeah, the princess and mirror part in the beginning is a bit slow but it eventually ties the story all together. It's extremely fantastic later, with planar travel etc.

D&D 5E (2014) Any authors you think should be in Appendix E but are not?

Under Jack Vance they should have specifically mentioned the Lyonesse trilogy. Plane shift and its material component the tuning fork, and the planes are straight out of the books. Magic in the story follows the Dying Earth logic which is very D&D. It's one of my favorite fantasy series and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rolling for Stats

Interesting. My players rolled straight 3d6 on a 6x6 and chose stats as a group. Everyone seemed ok with it. I hadn't thought about 3x3 but that seems pretty ok for new characters after the original ones start dying.

    D&D 5E (2014) Atheism/Agnosticism in 5e?

Atheists don't claim to know, they disbelieve. Those making supernatural claims have the burden of proof. I think this will clear things up. There are infinite things not to believe in, and rejecting the claims as untrue (e.g. due to lack of evidence) does not mean you claim knowledge of a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Atheism/Agnosticism in 5e?

Let's clear a couple of things: (a)theism is about belief - atheists don't believe, theists believe. Atheists don't deny gods, they don't believe in them. Just like you don't deny faeries and leprechauns, you just don't believe in them. (A)gnosticism is about knowledge. They're on different axis...

D&D 5E (2014) Why does the "criminal" background start with low wealth?

Nobility denotes privilege, not necessarily wealth. You're probably a second or a third son, or a daughter, of a noble so you won't inherit anything. Thus you need to make something out of yourself.

    D&D 5E (2014) Official complete background list!

If you are born a noble, you are privileged, but not necessarily wealthy. It's possible to be from an impoverished family, and you might be the second or the third son who will inherit nothing. Your big brother who inherited the fortune might just give you an armor and kick you out of the door...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tiefling preview!

I feel people are again complaining about the orange slice in their free drink. The looks have no effect on how the tiefling plays in your campaign. What I would have preferred is some story meat like variant tiefling abilities - even without any mechanical benefits (but those might be on the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Inspiration - Stealing from other games

You could do the FATE style fully so that the players start with a bunch of inspiration every session, and the GM may say "You'll get into some trouble due to your flaw/traits/background and get an inspiration point, or you can pay an inspiration point to not get in trouble."

D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e Basic Set: Things that make you go "what?!"

If you don't have enough, buy some more. Mistrustful evil wizards will just bring a pack of muscular slave children with them to their meetings.

    D&D 5E (2014) Starter set unboxing photos

Hide armor was 12 + Dex modifier in the playtest, thus it probably is 12 - 1 (from Dex 8) = 11.

    D&D 5E (2014) Against the Slave Lords/Dungeons of dread books...or another module/campaign?

Here's a couple of suggestions based on my experiences: The Sunless Citadel, The Forge of Fury, and The Standing Stone are all adventures from the d&d 3.0 adventure path. All of them are easy to run and adapt, easy to plant in your campaign, and 98% of the monsters are in the D&D Next bestiary...

    The 5 foot grid

Why not just go gridless and measure the distances like in war games?
