    D&D 5E (2014) not so critical hit

I don't really care. It's so easy to change to whatever you want it to be. I'll probably end up using Paizo's critical hits deck like I did in 3.x, and maybe make/loan special crit tables for certain monsters like dragons. E.g. DCC rpg has its own crit tables for giants, undead, demons and dragons.

    building a blind archer?

Do you want to create a blind fantasy archer who is as good or better than a regular archer? Or do you really want to be blind and overcome the weakness through feats and d&d gimmickry? Fantasy archer: Blindness is just fluff when it comes to archery. Talk your DM into letting you use your bow...

    D&D 5E (2014) (no more) boring shields

Shield-specific maneuvers might be good for fighters but atm I'd just allow you to sacrifice the shield to turn a critical hit into a regular hit - or maybe even halve the damage of an area attack.

    D&D 4E best 4e adventures?

I didn't run these using 4e but we really enjoyed Seekers of the Ashen Crown (minicampaign for Eberron), and one Eberron adventure from Dungeon. I can't remember its name. Forge-something, I think. It was set in Mournlands and had a warforged dragon in it. From what I've heard, Madness at...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mage Armor Criticisms

    1. False. 1 hour duration is no pain to track. It's just a short hand for 'lasts way longer than an encounter'. 2. 0 level spell doesn't mean it is at-will in the current version. You might take a tradition that gives you it as an at-will but the rules will be in flux for over a year so we'll...

D&D 5E (2014) I Really Like the Playtest Skill DCs

The first thing that comes to my mind is using acrobatics or tumble to pass through enemy ranks without provoking opportunity attacks. Just roll d20 + Dex mod + applicable skill against their Dex score. Simple as that. In general a good rule of thumb might be 'spend an action to gain an...

D&D 5E (2014) How should the Sorcerer look when he (or she) comes back?

And what is that? The sorcerer was originally added to 3.0 to justify the huge number of arcane spells so that the 1/3 of the book (hyperbole) wasn't dedicated to just one class. There was no real conceptual space to fill. I think sorcerer would fit inside the wizard quite well - or you could...

D&D 5E (2014) Flat math ability scores vs roleplay considerations

How about instead of giving points to the ability scores, you give points for point buy? E.g. your fighter advances to 4th level and gets 2 points which he can use to raise his Dex 10 to 12 or his Con 14 to 15. (I'm using the 3.x point buy values here). If you wanted to raise your highest...

    D&D 5E (2014) Too many knowledge skills.

Lemme elaborate my thoughts on this. You don't need knowledge skills for the stuff your character is supposed to know based on his background. The herald knows the hairstyles and flags of his area, and personally I'd just let the player narrate/world-build as he sees fit when it comes to that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Question about skills

I was unclear. What I meant was you should offer the current system as a basic alternative to the plain ability checks, and have a "real" skill system that's more interesting.

    D&D 5E (2014) Question about skills

Unlike AeroDM says, you can raise your skill(s) every second level or so up to +7. Mechanically they're just as uninteresting as before - plain task resolution - mostly working as a niche protection mechanic instead of serving the drama. IMHO this is one of the things D&D could just revise...

    News out of Gencon 2012?

I haven't seen the stuff collected anywhere (except maybe in critical-hits' news robot tweets) but you can watch the speeches from youtube: DNDWizards - YouTube Lots of good stuff about magic and monsters. Mostly they seem to implement the design stuff they talked about in GenCon 2010. Monsters...

    Hit Points per Level

This style puts way too big an emphasis on constitution. IMHO the first playtest package way of handing out random amounts (or set, evens out through levels anyway) of hp per level with Con only affecting how much stamina (self-healing) you had was pretty good.

Character Creation Now Supported: Let's Make Some Characters!

You know that Pathfinder is D&D 3.5 and it had the same array? -- I made a human fighter with the 4d6 drop lowest rule. I've been playing with straight 3d6 (roll 3 sets of numbers and choose) so I feel I just made an übermensch: Str 18, Dex 15, Con 16, Int 14, Wis 14, Cha 15 Includes +1 to...

[Playtest 2] Wizard and Rogue HD

I think the survivor specialty is just for that. You get +5 hit points in the beginning and +1 hit dice on the first level. Personally I don't mind the wizards having low hp. For those who want third level heroes in the beginning wotc could add an optional rule. Maybe Max HD + half Con score?

    Looking for Modules

If you want an easy-to-use toolkit book for a city, try Vornheim. It's excellent. Vornheim: The Complete City Kit (Print + PDF) If you want an adventure in a large city, try e.g. The Veiled Society (the module B6 for Basic D&D). It gives you an overview of the city Specularum and some factions...

The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan - your experiences?

I ran The Hidden Shrine last summer at a con using The Lamentations of the Flame Princess retroclone. It was great fun. The players get straight into exploration and action. Be sure to have lots of mundane equipment available to the PCs since it leads to some creative problem solving. I used...
