Intimidate, or "whoops I wasted my skill points"

The NPC was NOT immune in the excerpt. It was simply the case that because of the short-term nature of intimidate, and even moreso because of the negative consequences once it wore off, using it would actually work against the player characters in the example given. ( Convincing the Duke that...

    Excerpt: skill challenges

if you're stuck for working out which social skill applies, looking at the outcome of the mechanics and trying to match them to the gist of the conversation is usually helpful. Intimidate clearly state that after 1d6x10 minutes the target's attitude drops to unfriendly or even hostile. What...

    Excerpt: skill challenges

Not quite. Intimidation is about making people afraid of what you will do if they do not do as you say. It is, by definition, about striking fear of you into them - but not necessarily fear of violence. You could threaten to reveal a dark secret (blackmail), threaten to foreclose on a loan...

    New Monster Swordwing!

That's hardly news. It was covered back in February For those behind Firewalls here's more detail:

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

So what's new? In 3.5 you usually had to spend a feat or two to make a multiclass work Multiclassed spellcaster pretty much had to take Practised Spellcaster. Multiclassed fighters would take feats to offset lost hit points and BAB, and so on. If you were multiclassing into a Prestige class...

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

Agreed. I tried to cover that by specifying that the power had to be well-chosen. I fully expect that some classes and/or roles will get more mileage from certain multiclass powers than others. While I hope that this is not going to introduce a new form of system mastery, we unfortunately...

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

This is starting to sound like the hysteria surrounding the expected overpoweredness of the monk class pre 3.0. We all know how that ended. This excerpt is a marketing exercise. It deliberately raises more questions than it answers, because otherwise no-one would need to buy the rules. As a...

Mods: Please merge the multiclassing threads!!

Point taken, but how do you avoid that devolution? Lock the thread and disable new topics until the excerpt goes live? The only reason the early post took so long to start getting replies was because of the time of day it was posted. Look how thick and fast the nonsense came once folks woke up...

Mods: Please merge the multiclassing threads!!

I strongly disagree. I think the repost when it was actually up was beneficial. The early claim staking post (which you praise) was bogged down in a tangent by then. I hope that tangent does not get merged. As I said, posting the link before it was up was actually detrimental to the discussion...

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

If that was the case then you couldn't multiclass to qualify for paragon paths, which this excerpt clearly states you can. (Not this this was news to anyone who read this post a few days ago.) Since Mouseferatu was a playtester, pardon me if I put more value in his firsthand knowledge than in...

Mods: Please merge the multiclassing threads!!

Just please don't leave the two pages of discussion of Pistonrager's trick of posting the link hours before it actually went up. I mean golfclap for working out the link structure, but it was detrimental to the actual discussion of the article once it was posted.

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

ainatan, I think you're overlooking the increase in options afforded by having a power that lets you do something you otherwise couldn't do. Take the example of a party without a wizard ( as far as we know, the only controller in the 4E PHB ). The striker multiclasses into wizard , and takes a...

    Multiclassing.

Agreed. The 'same level or lower' obviously refers to the level of the power you swap out. So if you swap out a power you learned at level 6, you replace it with a power from the other class of level 6 or lower. You cannot drop a level 6 power to gain one of level 7 or higher.

    Elite minions

Minion - monsters scaled so that they can outnumber a party without overpowering them. Elite - monsters scaled so that they can be outnumbered but still pose a challenge for the party. Elite Minion - contradiction in terms, IMO.

    Smuggled photos

While initially disappointed about the loss of word count to whitespace and graphics, on reflection it occurs to me that those page breaks and illustrations will, if used in a consistent fashion, make it easier to find the section I'm looking for in the rules when flipping through rather than...

    At-Will Powers

Apparently they won't cost a feat. Look at today's preview: Starting at High level, section 5. Those rules wouldn't work if retraining cost a feat. (Besides which, it would make retraining counterproductive.)

    Saves End w No Action?

Are we talking whole body engulfed in flesh-melting flames (in which case I'd hope the condition would explicitly mention that it prevents you from fighting) or a couple of small fires on the surface of your armor which (while hot and distracting) are something you might choose to ignore because...

    Intra-Class Power feats?

Hence intra, because the query is about a Warlock sworn to Pact A taking powers from Warlock Pact B using the multiclassing system. Inter-class would be 'Can a non-warlock use multiclassing multiple times to take warlock powers from more than one warlock pact? For that matter, can anyone...

Removing the enhancement bonuses from items

I agree that the generic +X items lacked a sense of actually being magical, but I don't think you need to worry. It seems the designers agreed with you. Look at the Items Lists from DDXP. Not a single plain +1 item in sight. Instead, we have magical items with a power ( usually Daily or...
