D&D 5E (2014) RE: Tarasque vs. 5th lv. Wizard scenario - how does Wizard know to use Acid Splash?!?

I see this kind of sentiment come up a lot when discussing the tarrasque. And it confuses me. What does godzilla have to do with it? The tarrasque is a historical European myth and it's many times smaller and weaker than godzilla. It's like asking what a Fighter can lift up and considering...

D&D 5E (2014) RE: Tarasque vs. 5th lv. Wizard scenario - how does Wizard know to use Acid Splash?!?

That's the range for improvised weapons. Note by the way that Strength 30 is far weaker than one might think. Forget about throwing buildings around, the tarrasque can just barely lift a Pontiac Firebird from the ground - unless it's got passengers inside.

D&D 5E (2014) RE: Tarasque vs. 5th lv. Wizard scenario - how does Wizard know to use Acid Splash?!?

I meant to imply as much, yes. If we were talking about dire wolves unable to deal with flying opponents then this wouldn't have been an issue.

D&D 5E (2014) RE: Tarasque vs. 5th lv. Wizard scenario - how does Wizard know to use Acid Splash?!?

As a bit of background, back in 2e I and the rest of my party killed the tarrasque with overwhelming magic and of course flight. We didn't even know it was the tarrasque at the time, the DM just made up a new monster with a different appearance that happened to use the same stats. In other...

D&D 5E (2014) RE: Tarasque vs. 5th lv. Wizard scenario - how does Wizard know to use Acid Splash?!?

Even assuming that the tarrasque can use improvised weapons, such things have a maximum range of 60 feet. That is the same as Acid Splash but the wizard can cut up movement to hover at 75', dip down, throw some acid, and then rise back up to 75'. It would only deal 1d4+10 damage on a hit anyway...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spell interaction conundrum

As a small aside, I don't think a 5e Wall of Force can stop a ghost from passing through either. Ghosts can shift to the Ethereal plane, yes. But being incorporeal is a separate, unrelated effect. Being incorporeal is not the same as being ethereal - that's an assumption based on previous...

D&D 5E (2014) Legendary monsters are not solo monsters

According to my MM, they actually kind of do?

D&D 5E (2014) Why are vague rules praised?

Eh... crafting magic items in AD&D awards xp. Only 3e had magic item creation cost xp.

D&D 5E (2014) Potions of spells which require concentration

A potion doesn't cast a spell on you. It has its own unique, self-contained effect. This is most obvious when contrasting a potion of flying with the Fly spell. There's no reason to assume that the rules for spellcasting apply to something that isn't spellcasting. Asking whether you need to...

D&D 5E (2014) Monster Manual - What pictures really stood out, or changed your view on a monster?

Yep. It's also mentioned in the AD&D supplement, The Illithiad.

D&D 5E (2014) Inappropriate breasts on female monsters

Ok I got to ask... you are aware that when people here talk about "dragon boobs" they're talking about the females of dragonborn, a humanoid PC species? And not actual dragons? I'm pretty sure no edition of D&D gave boobs to actual dragons and nobody here argued that it should be otherwise.

    D&D 5E (2014) Kobold Preview

I think there's a bit of a missed opportunity here by not giving the kobolds a lair with lair actions of its own. They seem to have given lair actions exclusively to big, legendary monsters. But the trap-savvy kobolds would have been a perfect candidate for such a thing, representing all their...

    D&D 5E (2014) Pages from the PHB

I agree with most of those, as they match what I thought as well. I just wasn't sure enough to make the claim. On a closer reading, I think the feather-beard might say: 17 - 18 You grow a beard made of feathers that remains until you sneeze, at which point the feathers explode out from your...

    D&D 5E (2014) Pages from the PHB

I peered at the picture for a while and this is what I get from it: 01 - 02 Roll on this table at the start of each of your turns for the next minute. 03 - 04 For the next minute, you can see any invisible creature if you have line of sight to it. 05 - 06 A randomly chosen ??? controlled by...

D&D 5E (2014) Mearls' Interview with Bleeding Cool

He doesn't mean how the entire skill bonus is calculated. He's referring to how in 4e you can have a half-level bonus to attacks, skills, and defenses. Depending on your level it's always the same number. And in Next you can have a proficiency bonus to attacks, skills, and saving throws...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 28.04: Battlesystem! (mass battles rules)

It might "make sense" from a certain point of view, but it allows casters to go fully nova like never before. If you can get all the spells of 10 normal-rounds within the space of one battle-round, but you only suffer one "single" attack because you can attach yourself to a stand... that's going...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 28.04: Battlesystem! (mass battles rules)

Hmmm I see. But if a solo Fighter can get one attack per round and a solo Wizard can cast 10 cantrips per round... no, that can't be right. That's way too ridiculously overpowered to be true. And even if cantrips were to count as attacks instead of spells for this purpose, casting 10 Fireballs...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 28.04: Battlesystem! (mass battles rules)

Whoa there buddy, don't go putting words in my mouth! I'm not under any such assumption. I've never made any complaint about a solo killing a stand in a "single blow." (Although I can easily make a complaint about it if you like: if you win initiative against a stand and kill it in one single...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 28.04: Battlesystem! (mass battles rules)

Hmm. Maybe... not sure if that's the case or if it's really satisfying my questions. But! We're reaching the point of meaningless speculation since none of us can know for sure how things are handled. I'll just let the questions be for what they are and wait and see.

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 28.04: Battlesystem! (mass battles rules)

That doesn't solve things, it makes them worse. The issue is that stands can be caught within the AoE of attacks launched at un-connected solos. There's all sorts of clouds, lines, and cones that could clip a stand. The solution to make more solos is just going to magnify this problem, as...
