    ENWorld Edition Bias

It depends on which area of the site you most frequent. It has also changed over time. It was certainly very pro-4E a while back in this area, but now I think the anti-camp is much more vocal, and it is not just a few individuals either.

Help me keep the PCs in a Heroes-esque supers game working together

Need some feedback here boss (Rangerwickett)! Which of the various options on the thread are you liking/not liking or have you got enough stuff? Happy to try and brainstorm somemore though.

Help me keep the PCs in a Heroes-esque supers game working together

I think the idea of a retrovirus is interesting and you can use the fact it is a virus to keep everyone together. I would make the retrovirus have the following properties; 1) fatal to humans if not treated. 2) sensitive to a form of radiation known as Theta rays. 3) semi-sentient...

    Indispensable and Valuable Non-Fiction Sources

Mallus; the trick with using real-world stuff is to do what Tolkien did. Use just enough that the players unconscious accepts the fantasy stuff that you mix in with it. Then somehow, the whole thing feels much more real, at some deep emotional/visceral level.

    Changeover Poll

Is it just me or have the edition wars started to quiet down; I don't mean that we don't still talk about this stuff but just that the "don't particularly care for/have issues with 4E crowd seem to be the only ones posting here nowadays? Perhaps it is only in this forum section? I have noticed...

The Nature of Change (or, Understanding Edition Wars)

The problem with the modern world is that much of the change is for its own sake rather than for any real improvement. It is often about each generation repeating the mistakes of the previous one because there is no good way to transmit wisdom in the way that we transmit information between...

What would it take for 4E to win over the old guard? (Forked Thread: Changeover Poll)

4Es problem is not just mechanical for me (some of the mechanics are great); it is philosophical. No longer is D&D what any of us imagine it to be! Now it is what WoTC say it is! It is a minatures based tactical wargame with a few ill designed subsystems (these needed another year of playtesting...

    Indispensable and Valuable Non-Fiction Sources

I also have been heavily influenced by non fiction in my gaming, though not all is in books because some comes from my own experiences. Sword-fighting; Talhoffer, Lichtenauer, Fiore de Battatia or "the flower of battle" by Fiore de Liberi (all of these are fight-books on how to sword fight...

    Fantasy "biotechnology" and other alterations

I don't really care for fantasy biotech; too much real biotech in my life I guess! Plus I like my fantasy and my science firmly separate, but this talk all reminds me of that fantastic set of books the first of which was East of Eden; it is about a race of lizards that engineer animals and...

    Changeover Poll

I am not sure why this poll result (or any of the others) surprises anyone. WoTC set out to ignore their existing customer base ( the "Old guard", mean age 30+ according to WoTC; represented strongly on ENWorld), in order to try to hook younger people into playing D&D (not well represented...

    Changeover Poll

I have a dream; that in this great year we shall all be judged by the content of our characters, and not by the "colour" of our edition! I will see you in the promised land.

Underdark Trading Post contents...(possible Thunderspire spoilers)

Sorry; some of these need editing down but I am too tired to do it now. In the cold light of day, some will not work, I just wanted to create some Underdark commodities that were not the same old boring stuff but at the same time would not be SO useful to the PCs. Apologies if I fall short.

A few more; Items; A barrel of fire-quenching quarrels; each of these crossbow bolts has a canvas bag tied to its end. When fired above a torch or shot at a small campfire, these bolts release a spray of powder as the bag ruptures on impact. This whitish powder releases a cloud of heavy gas...

Soel; if you give us some idea of what you are after, and if any of the above fit, then I can come up with more. Mortalplague; Enjoy! I was born evil.

Help me encourage my "slayers" to roleplay

Umbran is the voice of reason; as ever! I love the way that some people have semantic arguments and then try and declare that their definition of a word or idea is an absolute. To answer the OP: you can be subtle as well. If the PCs don't want to talk, show them how they are losing out...

When was YOUR Golden Age of Gaming?

I agree that it is golden ages; in the mid 80s I could game or dream of gaming all the time and had little responsibility. There also seemed to be gamers everywhere back then. For sheer unadulterated joy, this time probablys tops anything. The atmosphere of some of those old games was something...

    Ultimate gaming table

My ultimate game table would include a glass top and a shelf underneath to put the 32'' flat screen TV that I use as a secondary screen for my laptop to create our battlemaps. The TV sits flat on top of the table at the moment, which is not ideal, as I am worried it will get stratched (by...

Underdark Trading Post contents...(possible Thunderspire spoilers)

Hi Soel, How about these for some ideas for Duergar treasures. Poisons; Arsenyl bolts. These black cross-bow bolt-heads are tempered with high levels of arsenic, both to improve the properties of the alloy and also because the metal is intrinsically poisonous. However, if handled without...

    Fantasy Novels and D&D

There are some modern Fantasy authors who are good; Katherine Kerr JV Jones Raymond Feist (his recent series is really interesting) Stephen Lawhead Tad Williams; LOVE the The Dragonbone chair etc Not so keen on latest stuff. Terry Brooks; if you don't mind a bit of JRRT ripoff for...

Gold, Slaves, and Power: A New Order

Hi Shark, How about using Iraq to teach some lessons about invasion. What if the Sharnu are not quite so homogenous as they first appeared and in fact are composed of three original ethnic tribes that were welded together by the oppressive power of the Sharnu royal house, who all hailed from...
