    The Fall of Khaiden-Sharnogg!

Hi SHARK! A number of things immediately spring to mind from your campaign description. The first problem/adventure/challenge is how to feed and keep together such a huge army without having any serious objective. How do Aldred and his companions keep the army from becoming a serious...

Where Has All the Magic Gone?

I know what people are saying about how difficult it is to make magic mystical in a game but the point is, I feel other games manage it much better; take Ars Magica for example! Here magic somehow feels more authentic and mystical because there are a set of laws of magic that must be...

    Treasures For The God-King!

I tried to go with the theme of big treasure that has some use (to an Emperor) and has some flavour but is not TOO useful in an adventuring context. I just felt an Emperor of millions would have some cool stuff and I also knew you would enjoy the reference to a certain former King of Cappodocia.

    Treasures For The God-King!

Hi Shark! Here are a few ideas based on your Persian theme. I was thinking that much of the treasury would be tribute collected from neighbouring Satraps and Client Kings. Haven't worried too much about mechanics as I figure you will tweak everything/anything to fit anyway. Enjoy!! 1) A gold...

Where Has All the Magic Gone?

Oh and the idea that people in a world ruled by magic would be as blase about it as we are about technology only have to think about the medieval world to realise this is not true. Ancient peoples all believed in magical forces and realms beyound their own senses and up to thw 18th century...

Where Has All the Magic Gone?

The problem with D&D magic is that is an entirely separate and distinct entity that is not connected to any belief system or any natural force or event. It is never used as a way to displace our scientific assumptions about the world, so of course we fall back on what we know. If the game world...

    Age of Worms for players

I have no experience with the AP but if someone wants to play a Rogue have them take a level of wizard and then practised spellcaster feat once they reach about 4th level. Then they should just keep increasing the Rogue and leave the wizard alone. That way, they can become a utility wizard to...

Just thought I would share this long story with everyone.

Hi Nate! Don't worry; girls can be more brutal than guys. My daughter (18) is a real bone cruncher when she plays; far more combat loving than the men in the group. I find one consistent theme amongst girls I have DMed is that they all seem to bond with and focus on familars and animal...

    Most Hardcore Player

I am no longer completely clear on what the design goals of DDI are now but maybe someone else can update us. There are programmes out there that allow you to see a virtual game table but as I understood it the DDI; 1) will allow you to use the 3D dungeon designer and to play in the 3D...

    Most Hardcore Player

Hi Joe! Technology is pretty good nowadays but I still think face to face is best. I battlegrounds will be my preferred mapping system if I have to DM across the net though, with Skype as the voice chat system. As for DDI, well, I have my fingers crossed but I am steeling myself for...

    Most Hardcore Player

I had alot of flu in November and consigned myself to the house to avoid infecting other people (I can work from home for about a week without problems, depending upon teaching). So to avoid missing my D&D game I used my gmail account to play by downloading googletalk and using the DMs webcam...

    4E Lunchtime Campaign

This reminds me of how I started roleplaying; in lunchtimes at school in the days of Tunnels and Trolls circa 1984. It was fun but we never got much done due to everyone starting off in the dungeon alone and usually we rarely met up (for this read rarely survived long enough to meet up). If I...

    D&D 4E Homebrew setting I'll use for 4e

Hi Rel! Great campaign. If you are going down this route then I think each plateau will have huge cisterns to contain water as there would not be enough from rain unless it was carefully collected and stored. These could turn out to be good lurking places for visiting monsters...

    Videogame Influences!

The problem with defining a "feel" as in "videogame feel", is that the person actually experiencing that feeling is not always aware of what particular set of stimuli has triggered that reaction. So defining it becomes a game of cat and mouse with your own unconscious. Add in twelve people on...

Monk a striker: Why? (Forked Thread: 3rd Party Poopers)

For me, the divide between marshal arts and magic is clear. Magic affects the world and the rules that govern it. It literally changes reality in a small area and can create something from nothing. Magic= changing the world! Marshal arts use Ki to change only the mind and body of the person...

    D&D 4E Homebrew setting I'll use for 4e

I am thinking that this mist is sounding more and more like water and that this is not a good thing; because you want to create a background campaign that is unique and also create more adventure sites. The current plateau idea reduces the available adventure sites because the players can't get...

    What's wrong with high-level/epic play?

As DM, the only way I could run high level D&D 3.5E was by having the PCs and all the monsters in excel spreadsheets. That way, I could instantly calculate buffs/debuffs. I also used the rule that 1d6 = 3 damage etc. I also used the rule that rnd/lvl spells= 1 encounter duration. Set-up was...

When did We Stop Trusting Game Designers?

Hi Hussar! Most of the thread was quite good debate, until page 7-8; please re-read that page 8 in particular and tell me it was on topic and nothing to do with edition wars. I agree it is not a particularly bad example, but I just got fed up with the same old people going over the same old...

When did We Stop Trusting Game Designers?

Oh Goodie! ANOTHER edition wars thread! I just can't get enough of them these days. It is such a pleasant surprise when you can open a thread on seemingly ANY topic and find it has drifted down this road. I particularly enjoy the originality of the arguments as well.

    Monster and Practiced Spellcaster feat

The text says "Choose a spellcasting CLASS that you possess....." so i would say no because Monsters, without class levels, cast spells AS a sorceror or wizard of X level but don't actually possess any class levels. In addition, they have to meet the 4 levels of spellcraft.
