Crit hit with stored spell in wpn

This is one I had come up when I was playing. I was a Rogue8/Wiz3 with practised spellcaster to make my shocking grasp deal 5d6. I routinely used a spell-storing rapier to deliver the spell. The DM always ruled that if the rapier critted, then the spell did as well for this reason: we only...

Would WFRP be an interesting game system to use in Forgotten Realms?

Do you mean WFRP 1e or 2e? 2e is a much more balanced system and includes rules for rituals etc. The magic system is also much better, albeit lower power than D&D, but I expect it would play well for keeping things like a typical "low level D&D game".

    Cruel DM stuff

I am feeling bad about my last session as DM, not a week ago. The PCs are all 13th level (but 32 point buy at start and a few too many magic items) and I have just taken over the reins again after playing in this campaign for a year. So I set up DM Genie (computer prg for 3.5) with this...

The other side of the coin

I agree with Exploder! I was once DMing B1: The Lost City, using the "Old Skool" style (without knowing what that was back then) and it was one of the most awesome games I have ever run. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife and everyone was on complete tenderhooks. It was so tense and...

DMs: what have you learned from PLAYING that has made you a better DM?

Hi Toben! The answer to your question is complex: First, I played for a LONG time without DMing and had to adapt to just getting my jollies from playing. I also played across a much wider range of levels than I ever have before 1-13: I don't think I have had a character gain more than 3-4...

What do you do without balance?

Danny: I don't think you are getting what I mean about constucts etc. IMHO, the ONLY way to fight them would be with agility and targetting "vital" areas like gem-stones, or via valves (like the statue in Jason and the Argonauts where it had a valve in its heel). This is because it would be...

What do you do without balance?

Danny: I am NOT a combat munchkin either, but if you are playing in a game where everything outside combat is a bit underdeveloped and the DM a little inexperienced, then you have to work with what you have. Many younger players really do assume that D&D is all about whacking things, and with...

DMs: what have you learned from PLAYING that has made you a better DM?

Another thread got me thinking about the last year, where I have seriously played (D&D 3.5) for probably the first time in 20 years. The last time I actually played this seriously was during the games of Tunnels and Trolls that got me into the hobby in the first place c.a 1984 Before this...

What do you do without balance?

What makes the sneak attack thing SO annoying is that it really kicks in at precisely the time (ca 11th level: because so many CR11+ monsters are undead or constructs) when magic is also starting to sideline the Rogue outside of combat as well. It really is poor design and something I am glad...

Whats the deal with rogues anyway?

Exploder: I never played a Thief, except back in BECMI so I don't remember them that well. In AD&D, what was a Thief's hit-dice? In Basic, it was a d4 I think, and therefore it was even more of a glass cannon than in 3.5. This is probably why I never rarely them, but I did not always like...

Whats the deal with rogues anyway?

Exploder: I assume you don't actually PLAY many Rogues from your comments (at least in 3.5)? If all I could do in an adventure was "find the traps and secret doors" life would get boring pretty quickly. D&D is primarily a combat game and I think all classes should be able to contribute. A...

What do you do without balance?

I have just finished playing a Rogue (Rog9/Wiz4) in our 3.5 campaign and had a blast but I used feats like Vexing Flanker to push up my attack bonus (+4 when flanking) and also the feats mentioned above from Dungeonscape to allow me to do half sneak attack damage to constructs/undead. My other...

Fighters didn't matter after 11th level?

I have to agree but would extend this to say, anytime we encountered a buffed wiz/sorc of high level, we got smashed unless we were incredibly careful. Ghoul Glyph covered by Nystul's magic aura is BRUTAL. You can't detect it and if you go within 5 feet then you are paralysed for 1d6+2 rounds...

Fighters didn't matter after 11th level?

It does indeed come down to DM style because there are loads of annoying things that can really stuff casters: like anyone who casts in combat drawing immediate attacks. Or how about feats like Mage Slayer, that mean that spell-casters always fail concentration checks when adjacent to you, and...

Fighters didn't matter after 11th level?

I think there certainly can be a problem at high level with casters, but some of it is because the DM has used only certain kinds of encounters. Scrying has not so far been a problem for our group as no self respecting BBEG has a lair that is not warded with Mordenkainen's Private Sanctum made...

    About Reveille

What Rev did is analogous to someone committing arson: he wanted to have an effect and to see his actions writ large. We all want to feel important but problems start when the only way someone can feel important is by causing harm to other people or their property. They are literally saying...

    A Question on Mapmaking

The answer is that if you want to start using photoshop, be warned that it is incredibly time consuming. I LOVE making maps, but I love doing so just for their own sake, and get pleasure from the act of actually making them. If making maps is just a means to an end, I would not go down this...

    About Reveille

Thanks for that Piratecat! I sort of knew that this was going WAY too far for an April Fool's joke, but then the internet constantly wrong-foots me, so on somedays I really don't know which way is up. I just hope that this WAS an April Fool's joke by Reveille, that has sort of gone wrong...

    About Reveille

It is strange that I never felt emotionally involved with Reveille's situation, and for the life of me I cannot pin-point why. I read the entire thread and checked every day, but never felt like it was real somehow. Something still isn't right though, so I have to ask: I am the only one...

    Professional GM Diary: Final Preparations

I haven't seen anything else but what in this thread Obryn, but if what you say is true then the tone of some of the posts I have seen here are even more disturbing. I feel sad that some people here think it is funny to laugh at someone with problems and look to bring them down. Wouldn't a...
