Scales of War Adventure Path... How is it?

I actually played all the way through Age of Worms, after which I was no fan of Paizo, or of 3e anymore. As a player I got the impression that there was too much story that only the DM was exposed to. IMO APs are meant to be played, by everyone at the table.

Scales of War Adventure Path... How is it?

I've been DMing a group through Scales of War: right now they're in the tower section of Shadowrift of Umbraforge. It's the first time I've DMed in 5 years so I'm fairly rusty. As a DM I like scenarios that give the players strong motivations and the don't rely on the players or the monsters...

Two-blades ranger with two bastards - kosher?

Yes a two-blades ranger could easily have two bastards, perhaps more if he and the woman-he-isn't-married-to have a lot of children. Whether they'd be kosher or not I don't know.

Mearls on Controller design and At-Will balance

I think it'd be nice to replace all the implement mastery effects with something more "controllery." Only Orb of Imposition has a control effect now, and it's very weak at low levels and very broken at high. Also, I'd like the masteries to be in constant use during an encounter, more like the...

Mearls on Controller design and At-Will balance

Thunderwave and Cloud of Daggers aren't so hot when you've only got 10 Wisdom. It's IMO poor design that none of the wizard powers use Con or Dex for secondary modifiers. Hopefully they'll fix this as well when they make the wizard more controllery.

Mearls on Controller design and At-Will balance

My Int 20 wizard did great in KotS. Then we moved on to Thunderspire Labyrinth where: - there are no minions, anywhere. At least that I've seen. - Duergar are the main enemies for a lot of it. The designer who updated duergar to 4e decided it'd be a great idea to give them most of the...

    Dragon 370 - Invoker Preview

Yeah. Mechanically, it feels like a lot like a re-badged wizard. I would like to see summoning take much more of a role. (And as someone playing a wizard, seeing both the new controllers getting leather and hide prof for free is extremely irritating! I call on all wizards to protest the leather...

    Swoardmage versus Battlerager vigor fighter

If the party already has a wizard, I'd choose the battlerager fighter instead of the swordmage. The swordmage is a defender with a lot of controller thrown in, and you've already got a specialist controller. Unless your DM likes minions, I mean, really likes them a lot, I think you'll be...

    layoffs?

Tweet was there a long time before that! But I agree though: anyone who's signed on with WotC since, say, 2001, has to be aware that their business model defines "permanent employment" as "4 to 10 years." And my sympathies for all those made redundant. The "just before Christmas" technique...

    Broken and banned

Covering what hasn't been errated yet, what I think is brokenly overpowered: From the PHB: the Orb of Imposition power will need some sort of correction if the characters ever reach high level. The Champion of Order paladin paragon path gets a power called Certain Justice which I think looks...

    Draconomicon Excerpts - Brown Dragon

That breath weapon is mega-nasty! Synchronicity: As I read about the Scourge Dragon earlier today I wondered if a good theme for the chromatic dragons was as incarnations of the 7 Deadly Sins(*). And now we have a Gluttony Dragon! (*) But then I had to ask: which one is the Lust Dragon?

    Ability Score Blues

I think that choice of a 20 or an 18 for the primary stat actually depends on which particular stat it is. Some stats just give more per point than others. The best stat, Dex, gives Attack, Damage, Initiative, Reflex and AC. Int gives the same minus Initiative. So for a class which uses either...

    Class Popularity?

Party 1: Fighter, Paladin, Cleric, Warlord, Ranger, Warlock, Wizard. (I play the wizard) Party 2: Fighter, Cleric, Rogue, Warlock, Wizard. (I DM) The strikers do nice damage, and the wizard can do even more in the right circumstances, but I think the defenders and leaders are more essential...

    Gladiator's up

Very crunchy. The Arena Fighting feats also give the names for at least some of the new at-wills appearing in Martial Power.

    Can anyone explain Masterwork Armour?

I think I should point out the thread necromancy here. Posters are responding to a discussion from back in June.

Anyone currently or planning to playtest Artificer/Barb?

If one of the characters in the SoW game I'm running dies, I'll let the players try Artificier or Barbarian. As long as they're clear that it's a playtest and the character may need drastic changes if it's not working, or working too well. Edit: Actually, I should really make sure it's OK with...

    Barbarian is up!!!

Good point, for some silly reason I'd been counting them in ranged proficiency.

    Barbarian is up!!!

Initial thoughts: Maybe I've missed something, but I can't see anything stopping the Barbarian from taking the heavy armour and shield feats. Maybe it's my inner minimaxer, but they'd be the first feats I'd take. I think this is against the theme of the lightly armoured/high hit point striker...

    Adventure Choices

That's a nice idea. I've been running RaR, and I've had pretty much the same experience as you: early encounters fun, dungeon itself confused. The players seem to be enjoying themselves, though I think it's because most of them haven't played 4e before and they're finding the new combat system a...

August 2009: Adventurer's Vault 2 and Revenge of the Giants

Wizards have updated their 2009 Product Release list with the August 09 releases: Adventurer's Vault 2 and Revenge of the Giants. I'm surprised DMG2 hasn't been listed yet.
