D&D 4E Revisiting an old question: 4E Liker - anything you worry about?

Mine fears were fairly generic: I think this one was born out. 4e is simpler, yes, but I would have liked them to have gone a bit further. Some people have complained about this, but I haven't found it much of a problem myself. Perhaps starting with an extra encounter power would have been...

    Design and Development: Magic items

Design and Development: The Evolution of Magic Items is up, and is the last article from Dragon 367. (They really seemed to rush at the end of the month here...) The 2005 rules certainly had a smaller "christmas tree" than we ended up with.

Order of the Stick 597 is up!

While V is certainly acting evil, I'm not sure he's wrong. The world is threatened. Spending months helping Hinjo and co doesn't seem to be helping them save it. They are wasting time.

Adventurer's Vault - What do you think?

It's all appropriate for players. You may want to houserule some things, but there are no artifacts or major cursed items (there are a couple with minor curse effects.)

WotC: Mike Mearls and Rob Heinsoo change roles.

Rob Heinsoo was the Lead Mechanical Designer for 4th edition: if you don't like how it's turned out, then he is probably more responsible than Mike Mearls. OTOH, if like me you like 4e, the Rob is someone you thank for it.

    Now Is This A Promise?

It'll be a promise if they're still saying it when you sign on the dotted line. Right now it's more a statement of intent.

    I played 4E today. I died.

Oh my god, you died! How did your character do? (Thanks, I'll get my coat)

    D&D 4E Stuff I wish they'd have left from the 4e playtest

One playtest comment I recall said that Second Wind was once a minor action for everyone. I wish they'd kept that.

    Balanced & Optimised or Not?

I'm not surprised. My feeling is that there are basically two roles in 4e combat: melee and not-melee. You got to have melee, because ranges aren't great and monsters are fast. It can be a fighter or paladin, a strength cleric, a twf ranger, maybe even a properly designed staff wizard can do it...

    The 4E Players Handbook: good...bad...ugly..

Not to speak ill of the dead and all, but while Gygax had an interesting and erudite style, I don't think he could write decent rules. See his post-TSR games for more examples. My comments on the 4e PHB: Good: an excellent attempt to produce a coherent system out of the mess that D&D...

Sept 2nd News - I wont be doing Scales of War

Only if you believe a DM is comparable with the reader of a book. I think the DM of a published module is closer to the director of a play written by someone else. And it's usually a good idea for the director to have a script when they start the first act.

Sept 2nd News - I wont be doing Scales of War

I've just started running Rescue at Rivennroar, and while I'd like an overview, I'd actually prefer there to be much more connection between RaR and Siege of Brodrin's Watch. I may just use another module like Scepter Tower of Spellguard - I quite like RaR as a starter adventure, but SoBW seems...

    The 4E Players Handbook: good...bad...ugly..

I voted "Best Yet", but I wouldn't call it great. I would call the other PHBs pretty bad.

New Excerpts: FR: feats and AV: Holy Symbols and Wands

Those summary lists of feats can leave out important info, extra limitations often tend to appear when reading the full description. I'm going to reserve my judgment about whether these feats are broken until the FRPG is released. I like that the Master's Wand of Magic Missile gives a bonus to...

Rogue's At-Will Sly Flourish, is it too good ?

I haven't seen Sly Flourish in play, but I don't think it looks that exceptional as an at-will power. Paladins and Wizards get Holy Strike and Cloud of Daggers - both at-wills that add a second stat to damage, and I haven't seen many arguments that they are too powerful. An optimized high Dex...

    Who Will Get the Axe?

Actually I could interpret that as a good sign. Given how successful Wizards software endeavours have been up till now, perhaps scrapping the lot is the best thing they can do. It's firing Linae that looks like a bad sign to me, specifically wrt changes to the GSL. According to everyone who's...
