digital insider: Monk in PH3, playtest in May

Loved the gladiator article, so this Assassin one is right up my alley. Very excited for March, all things considered! Familiars are sweet, I'm interested to see what they'll do mechanically. And the Monk! Let's see if WotC can do better with the old boy this time around.

    Roles - do they work?

So play the class that does the combat stuff you want, and ask your GM for the fluff stuff you want. Cantrips are mostly a flavor thing (probably someone in the party will have a hand free for a torch, which you can claim to be your light spell). Your GM might even give you the set for nothing...

New Class - Puppeteer, Arcane Controller ~ Updated now with PDF

Defenses: Who cares? Summons use your defenses, and they're huge fire angels or whatever. This is 4e, we go for the easy route with this stuff. Since you still are hurt (indirectly) when the puppet is hurt (and your bloodied value is not much HP at all), I think it's fair. You might let the...

    Roles - do they work?

Hedge Wizard's Gloves, from the AV. Level 4 item, 840 gp. Gets you the two best ones, in my opinion.

4th Edition Improvements (please read OP)

Eh. There aren't many "only succeed on a 20, only fail on a 1" situations anymore, but with the way the stat increases work, PCs tend to end up with a pretty big variance on defenses. Attacking a Wizard's Fort, for example, is usually a pretty safe bet. Ditto with a Barb's Reflex. And a DM...

If WotC came out with an "Advanced" D&D supplement... what would you put in it?

Really? These seem to work pretty well, balancing having a buddy with the action economy near-perfectly. What would you want to change?

If WotC came out with an "Advanced" D&D supplement... what would you put in it?

*Scratches head* Aren't there already two other options? You definitely don't need one if you don't want.

New Class - Puppeteer, Arcane Controller ~ Updated now with PDF

Interesting! Kind of a Shaman-esque controller. I like the way it works. A couple of points: -You might point out the key ability scores at the beginning, just for easier reference. -Why doesn't the puppet get your full defenses? Attackable conjurations do, and it would help it survive longer...

    Roles - do they work?

You should check out the Avenger when it gets printed, it looks like it'll do a lot of what you want, sticking close to one enemy at a time and destroying it. It is divine, though. Flickr Photo Download: S1051701 Flickr Photo Download: S1051700

    Roles - do they work?

Well, I didn't mean to put words in your mouth, so I apologize if I did. But I think I did address those points as well: -Nobody likes giving up feats, but I don't think the * Power feats are a waste. They let you dabble in another role, giving you versatility that I think is worth the cost. A...

    Roles - do they work?

Fair enough! It's great how many different games are out there, each with different things to appeal to people.

    Roles - do they work?

Well, that's totally legitimate, but now you're moving away from the class-based system entirely, and onto something more like HERO or GURPS. Building the classes you want out of the options available. That, of course, has its pros and cons, as does a more focused class system. 4e has a tightly...

    Roles - do they work?

You said it was a waste of feats, and that PMing to gain an at-will was too expensive. I pointed out that those feats can be extremely useful, and that at-will swapping is dangerous. Did I not address your point?

    Roles - do they work?

They aren't a waste at all! The initial feats are some of the best ones printed (especially the more stat-restricted MP ones, Battle Awareness is great), and spending feats to branch out and expand your versatility (say, a Barb becoming more of a defender by taking Fighter powers) is a fair...

If WotC came out with an "Advanced" D&D supplement... what would you put in it?

I really like this idea, although flavor is already pretty divorced from mechanics. Greater importance (and balance) put on non-combat roles and the ability to choose one independent of combat role would be aces. I'd like some alternate power structures, just experiments with the game system...

    Roles - do they work?

...And would have torpedoed the game's carefully-designed balance, and any reason to have a team, rather than a bunch of self-sufficient adventurers who happen to work together.

Help my barbarian: Bloodclaw or Jagged weapon?

I picked Bloodclaw for mine, but he uses a Mordenkrad so Jagged wasn't an option. They're both very nice! ...Maybe too nice, about half my new level 11 party uses one or the other. I can see why, though, they're both constant effects that aren't hard to remember (I just have to remember to...

    Roles - do they work?

The problem with that idea is that you can make a character who can do everything badly, or everything great. Neither one is something we want to see again (good riddance 3.5 bard and druid). Classes who can go one thing well and optionally another thing decently are much easier to balance, and...

    Anthropomorphic Animal PCs!

I, um, hate pimping out my stuff more, but I made some Lycanthrope races that might fit the bill. The hybrid forms are basically anthropomorphic animals, and each one gets at-will and encounter powers that work with their different forms. I think they're decently well-balanced, too, although I...

    Planar Epic Destinies not up?

Wow. I don't know if these are overpowered (level 30 stuff ought to be crazy powerful, and I don't think they're better than Divine Miracle), but it's all very awesome and flavorful. Although I don't know why the Prince of Hell gets a level 25 Attack instead of a 26 Utility.
