If I eliminate minions, what extra should I give controllers?

Prepare to be disappointed, I'd be very surprised if they changed existing powers in AP. That's what errata's for. To the OP: I think the minion-clearing-only aspect is exaggerated, but you might consider adding small status effects into the pure damage spells if you don't use any. Like...

    Roles - do they work?

Therein lies "rules mastery" and catering towards the more experienced players. It's the attitude that got us worthless (or at least, mostly worthless) feats like Dodge or Toughness in the 3.5 PHB. Suboptimal choices are a waste of ink and paper, and I don't want them anywhere near my books...

    Lunge Attack

So, it's a bit weird that knocking an enemy prone and shifting away makes you invulnerable, when either closer or further would let them attack. How about a Lunge action to fill the gap? Lunge - Standard Action Move one square and make a melee basic attack. So it doesn't get the attack bonus a...

To split or not to split

Why not? The other target can be the ground, or a tree stump or something. You're throwing away half the damage, so it ain't like it's too powerful. Just make sure not to miss the ground, or your friends will never quit making fun of you.

Healing surge for non core classes?

Plus, they're a bit MAD, and can't afford to pump Con as much as a fighter.

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

A bit off-topic, but... In case you were interested in making this concept more effective, I have a couple of tips: -Hedge Wizard's Gloves, from the AV, give you Prestidigitation and Mage Hand, and are very low level items, under 900 gp. So with that out of the way, I'd start off as a Ranger...

    Deities and Demigods: Bane

This is super-cool, nice work Ari! I'd like to see these for all the evil gods, their lack of support currently (no CD feats) is annoying. Zehir or Asmodeus next, please!

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

Sure, quick rolls where some characters are better than others I don't have a problem with. It's things like entire fights are decided by the spellcasters' first rounds, or a dungeon of traps that only the Rogue is equipped to disarm, that bother me. Of course the GM needs to cater to players...

Healing surge for non core classes?

Here's the full list. Druids get one more, befitting their melee ability; Barbs get two more to offset their low defenses, and the Swordmage gets one fewer for reasons I do not know. EDIT: Hmm, Avengers get one more, too. Weird.

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

OK, I don't think we're on the same wavelength. I'm viewing the question in terms of sheer power, while you're coming at it from a different angle. What flavor has been hurt by enforced balance? What were you able to do before that you can't now?

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

OK, but that leads straight to the Shadowrun Hacker problem, where everyone plays their own single-player game and each has very little influence on their teammate's area of expertise. The problems there are: It requires the DM to carefully tailor their campaign to give everyone roughly equal...

    Worst 4th Ed Class

Yeah, the right Wizard dailies and encounters seem to make all the difference. I think what AP needs the most, quite apart from better at-wills, is a greater selection of spells like those. More walls and zones, definitely.

    Weapon/Implement Expertise: +1 to-hit?! Yuck!

Yes, but this makes the 20/+3s that much more powerful, for the relatively minor cost of one feat. It's a gain in power for them with very little tradeoff, which in my mind goes against 4e's basic concepts. Think of it in terms of opportunity costs. You have to give up a heck of a lot for that...

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

Why is balance in a game a bad thing? In fantasy literature, the characters don't have to share a spotlight. In a game, everyone ought to feel roughly equally important and useful to the success of a group. They don't all have to be equally useful all the time, (the rogue will always be a better...

Goodman Games to publish a 4e print magazine under the GSL

Awesome! 2 bucks a month, you bet I'll subscribe. Hopefully their character options are as in-line with the books as Dragon's are.

    Battle Pyres

That's what I'd do, too. If the secondary attack was supposed to be applied to every target hit by the primary, I'd have the Target say, "Each enemy hit by the Primary attack", and make the Secondary an Effect. I'd rule that the Secondary can be used against one target every turn, including the...

    I want PHB 2 now

Sorc's a striker, but it has a few area attacks (the Dragon Magic path has a ton of close blast 3s), so it could probably do for a controller in a pinch. Much more about the damage than the debuffs, though.

    I want PHB 2 now

Bah, 5E sucks, it's not even real D&D anymore. The developers focused so much on making it immersive and versimilitudinous, they totally forgot about combat. I wish they had focused on the G part a bit more, and not so much on the RP! Maybe the inevitable 5.5 will be decent...

What PHB2 options are you most looking forward to?

Wardens are Primal Defenders. They partially shapeshift with their dailies to buff themselves, and they can slide and slow distant marked enemies and attack adjacent ones. They get tons of HP, even moreso than other defenders, and can mark everyone around them as a free action. They sound like...

    So, Wintertouched...

Eh, I dunno. CA's not that hard to get anyway if you have melee buddies to flank with, and there's an opportunity cost for those two feats and magic weapon. You could get, say, a Footpad's Friend dagger from the AV and two nice rogue feats from MP instead, and I bet you wouldn't be much worse off.
