I think that you have a great idea there. If you're thinking of making the PCs the Losers, I would wait at least a year for more issues explaning who "Max" is and what is actually going on, unless you want to start making stuff up real fast.
the "i" before "e" rule is not really a rule, it is a (flawed) mnemonic. There are numerous examples of exceptions to this "rule"

the funny thing about all this (and the point of Morrison's run) is that thanks to all of that, the slate is much much cleaner now for future writers to work with and future readers to come into without having to learn 30 years of back-story.
