D&D 5E (2014) Masque of the Red Death as an earth or non-earth campaign setting

If you wanted this to work in Eberron, you would place the campaign within Karrnath.

D&D 5E (2014) Is it just me or does Tiamat kind of blow in Tyranny of Dragons?

Indeed. Legendary actions refresh at the start of a new round and can be taken on anyone's turn.

D&D 5E (2014) Eberron Action Points for 5E (my conversion)

Inspiration is essentially the same mechanic. I would say a character can accumulate an additional Inspiration/action point every 4 levels. And just expand on what inspiration can do without a feat. Allow the feat to add even more, increase die size, etc.

I did, Ill edit ofr clarity, but duh moment.

    D&D 5E (2014) Playing with Hit Dice

The trick is to balance the use. RAW you get back 1/2 HD on a long rest. So there are two fold factors here, balance with resources as given, and balance as resources at higher levels. Using some of these suggestions is a no brainer at lvls 1-4 where a cure wounds or bard song can recover...

    D&D 5E (2014) Playing with Hit Dice

Or increase for that matter. 1/day you coould spend a HD to get back a spent class ability (that recovers on a long rest). Spend a HD 1/day to make any short rest ability recharge on a d6. Expend a HD permanently to recover from a disease. Expend 1 HD to gain a second action, once per short...

D&D 5E (2014) DMG excerpt: random magic item tables

Is kinda strange, but maybe Table A /B contains an overall % of magic arms, armor and items.

For those in favor of permanent loss, magic is always the fix.

    D&D 5E (2014) Playing with Hit Dice

I like this. Its a way of sucking out CON without touching ability scores. Since HD are a naturally refreshing resource, it can be controlled. I like the idea of life drain taking away HD, and maybe dealing some damage based on the # of HD removed.... target loses 1d4 HD and takes 1d4 points...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sorcerer spell selection

A Sorcerer is not intended to be a master of magic, but rather an innate spellcaster. The power flows through them, sometimes uncontrollably. As such this power grants them a limited repertoire of powers, usually primal, elemental destructive forces. Its a limiter on the class for both...

D&D 5E (2014) Can my table focus on making things fun instead of optimizing?

Ive seen games ruined by optimized characters (using DM agreement to use broken things like Nightsticks and other cheeses). Ive also seem games ruined by DMs having an Iron Fist and controlling every thread on your clothes, and micromanaging the game to ad infinitum. Everyone at the table...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs: How Do You Handle Metagaming?

I didnt take your initial comment as a time-saving gripe, but took it as you didnt like them using the hex map to strategize.

D&D 5E (2014) I Am SO Over The "Rootless Vagabond" Archetype

I played in a long running Age of Worms campaign. I played a Ranger/Scout Archer Archetype. I came in the game around 6th level. The other players were a Knight, a Cleric, a paladin, and a wizard (and sorcerer at one point). I was a simple lowly farmer, my life turned upside down when my...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs: How Do You Handle Metagaming?

I'm all for checks in a tense moment. And I've been known to require spellcasting or arcana checks for subtle or overt spellcasting shenanigans, but for the most part if the player took time to come up with something out of the box, I reward them... as long as its not pure cheese. When one...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs: How Do You Handle Metagaming?

This and the other suggestions above seem like unneeded complexity. The PCs are heroes... this is what heroes do. Is the story about where they placed the fireball? Or is the story about how they killed the ogre king? Let the blunders come from the dice. Although firing a spell through a...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs: How Do You Handle Metagaming?

Wait... you play on a hex map (presuming a battle mat) but discourage counting hexes? So you play with a grid, but the players have to ignore the grid and play theatre of the mind?

D&D 5E (2014) Can my table focus on making things fun instead of optimizing?

As a DM its easy to remember your own villains, or those in the adevnture book. You read it at least 5 times a page. But the PCs may never know it, or get told once in passing. To create a memorable villain, its important to utilize lots of repetition in names.

D&D 5E (2014) Can my table focus on making things fun instead of optimizing?

An interesting experiment would be to hand out a very powerful weapon or item that is clearly ordained for one of the characters, but may take his optimized, level planned character for a u-turn. Its a great moral dilemma. He shouldn't feel weaker using the new item or weapon, but different...
