    D&D 5E (2014) Mitigating Critical Hit Devastation

Depends on the DM's dice too. My group made it nearly 1 full session in HotDQ, Episode 1, trouncing everything. Multiple patrols just got wiped out. But I was rolling poorly. End of the night, they got caught in the Mill and were doing OK until a single guard took out the fighter with a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mitigating Critical Hit Devastation

As it should. Players can crit on a 1st level spells that do 8d6 damage. Sometimes though, I do not double the 'special' damage dice like from '1st round attack does 2d6 or whatever. Even though RAW indicates you should.

    D&D 5E (2014) Mitigating Critical Hit Devastation

Probably already stated, but since Crits dont double anything but damage dice its not that big a swing. In previous editions and PFRPG, the damage dice simply didnt matter. Who cares if you swing 1d8, you stacked power attack, bonuses, str, and all this other stuff that far out-math'd the dice...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

Which is exactly the advise given on the first page of this thread. Where I took offense was people blaming the player.

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

I only saw this post on this forum. Not sure what you are referring to multiple forums... unless you are referring to the roll20 post for their game. I will not fault him for asking advise, which is clearly what he did in the OP. What do you all think about his crazy house rules and how it...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

While some agree with you, others and myself do not. Where you see a whining player, I see a player wanting to play but hitting DM imposed walls. Walls that were not pre-built. Its clear to me and other, the DM was the overreactionary and defensive one. Not once did this DM ever, EVER state...

D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen going really fast

Episode 3 is a dungeon crawl. After that it gets sketchy for a while as the caravan trips could take innumerable sessions, or one depending on what you want to accomplish. Go at the pace they want to go at. If they like the roleplaying, let that be the focus.

D&D 5E (2014) What Magic Item do you want to see most in the DMG?

While I like the flavor of specific weapons doing damage to monster types without a native bonus... I do think bonuses should be in there. I am not saying I want +1 and +3 vanilla swords. But rather Icy Breath, a dagger that does 1d4 cold damage per hit and functions as a +1 dagger. The plus...

D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen going really fast

My first session got about 1/2 way through Episode 1. They still have a bit to go, but that was about 3 solid hours. Depends all on what they do. Episode 2 could take a few sessions if they like to roleplay and you fill the camp with interesting things, or if you turn it into a skirmish on...

    D&D 5E (2014) I'm writing an adventure, what should I know first?

The first thing you need to know is if you will legally be able to publish it. If your adventure includes a Mind Flayer, you will not. AT this point there is no legal standing one way or the other for 5E material. You could put all this hard work into it, only to have a cease and desist from...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

Now thats some good hyperbole. I dont see how its unreasonable to assume that if you sit down to play a complex game, the person running the game has at least read over the rules. Playing RISK with this DM would be like starting a land war in Asia.

We answered this in another thread of the same title. Yes.

D&D 5E (2014) Running HotDQ with three players and no healer in the party. Any advice?

In playing the module, and system in general... do not underestimate the power of higher HP pools.

D&D 5E (2014) Running HotDQ with three players and no healer in the party. Any advice?

The module starts at level 1, so with some healing, getting to level 2 could happen within a few short encounters. They might even be level 3 before they fight cyanwrath.

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

^This. When I DM I am not aware of every spell, character ability, or nuance they possess. I have my own stuff to worry about. But I do know what their class is and is not capable of. If they do something that sends an alarm my way, I would rather break table and look it up for a minute than...

D&D 5E (2014) Running HotDQ with three players and no healer in the party. Any advice?

Get the body bags ready... Seriously though, you have a few options. 1) Run an NPC cleric. 5e is very easy and quick to run, running an NPC char is a breeze. 2) Lower the number of enemies in each group approriately... usually by 1-2 per enemy type. 3) Keep the number of enemies the same...

D&D 5E (2014) No Armor: Addiing Proficiency to AC

    D&D 5E (2014) [MERGED] Various crossbow/dual-wielding threads

ALL ranged weapons in 5E use DEX for the attack and damage rolls. The Crossbow Expert feat does not change this.

    D&D 5E (2014) [MERGED] Various crossbow/dual-wielding threads

The Crossbow Expert and Dual Wielder feats don't interact. Crossbow Expert does not impose any two-weapon fighting penalties because the other weapon is not a melee weapon. So if you are trying to use Crossbow Expert, you must wield a hand crossbow and a one handed melee weapon (which is...
