D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

Lets be clear here, we arent talking about a DM giving a +2 bonus instead of a +1, or making a ruling about a vague spell. We are talking about a DM who, upon seeing an ability of a core class in action, tried to kick that ability out of the game. This also isnt a situation where the DM and...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

That's applauding ignorance. If the DM wants to run a game, they should be competent in the material. It would be like auditioning for a part in a play, and the director changing the part around completely, and when asked why, you find out the director hasn't even read the original.

D&D 5E (2014) The Case for a Magic Item Shop?

From the teasers, most of the player's wealth would be spent on living expenses and stronghold/land purchases. But in a mobile campaign, where the PCs arent rooted down, we simply dont know what those options are yet.

D&D 5E (2014) No Armor: Addiing Proficiency to AC

I would think modern style armors would be essentially the same as old-world style armor just with different names. Full plate becomes Infantry Armor, Splint becomes Riot Gear, etc. Can easily keep equivalents. Your suggestion works until those 'special' classes that do this already get...

D&D 5E (2014) The Case for a Magic Item Shop?

Talk to your GM. Find out how long this Underdark scenario will last. If its going to be the crux of the campaign for the foreseeable future, raise your concerns and come up with a way to either get that item, or something equivalent. Maybe you can do a quest for a mage that he will gift you...

D&D 5E (2014) What Magic Item do you want to see most in the DMG?

What Magic Item do you want to see most in the DMG? Could be as simple as higher healing potions, or Deck of Many Things (as we've seen previewed). Post what you are looking forward to, or even what you DO NOT want to see. Personally, I cant wait to see if there is a Sphere of Annihilation.

    D&D 5E (2014) So…..is the Dungeon Master’s Guide strictly necessary?

Ignoring the free PDF's for a moment. The Player's Handbook is essential... it contains all the rules necessary (Yes Starter set suffices as well). The Monster Manual is probably also essential if you wish to not make every single monster (although PHB does not have rules on this so youd be on...

    D&D 5E (2014) Can you see when you're Blinded?

Next session bring a can of mace. Set it on the table. Make a motion to re-visit the blinding issue with an experiment.

    D&D 5E (2014) Opportunity Attacks and Spells

Not only does the spell say it causes an AoO, but it also says it uses the target's reaction. Which is not forced movement.

    D&D 5E (2014) Can you see when you're Blinded?

Also if you wish to further humiliate them, that sentence, “A blinded creature can’t see and automatically fails any ability check that requires sight” does not include a list, so they are correct in that astute observation. However, the and in question joins two thoughts and is strictly...

    D&D 5E (2014) Can you see when you're Blinded?

I hereby, revoke your DM's Membership card in the Fraternal Order of DMs.

    D&D 5E (2014) Opportunity Attacks and Spells

Dont have my PHB on me to confirm, but unless the spell says "target disengadges" then yes, I would rule the bard (as long as he had a reaction available) could take the attack of opportunity.

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack with d8 or more WEAPON.

You can sneak attack with ANY melee FINESSE weapon and ANY RANGED weapon.

House rule for overnight healing: opinions wanted

Could be on the low side. But I was assuming a healer and class abilities to pickup the slack of 1 to 2 HD worth of healing per short rest.

House rule for overnight healing: opinions wanted

Clerics would be in high demand to expend all healing prior to resting (as is usually the case anyways). Like Boarstorm said, 2 day rests might become more common. Consider a 10th lvl party. RAW they get 5 HD back per long rest and full heal. They have 5HD to use throughout the adventuring...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

Let's not devolve into the admittedly arbitrary nature of hit points and healing. Simply though, I would say it is a process that takes X amount of time. Healing doesn't magically happen at the x-1 second of a rest. It is a process of bandaging, resting, and whatnot that requires the full time...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

If the DM in this situation had adequately explained why he was being adversarial, or why he was removing that player's ability, it might be a different story. But the fact that he did it directly in response to the spell, and only relented after another player stood up as well, proves my point.

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

As long as you didnt say, "Oh btw, this is how rests work" halfway into the first game. No one is arguing DMs dont have that ability to alter the game to their needs, as long as its justifiable, explained, and agreed upon by all. But check the DMG for ideas on how this might affect classes with...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

As a DM I make sure to explain short rests, or ask the PCs what they are doing. Its anything but an arbitrary time. Because there are stipulations on what a short rest entails. In my HotDQ game the PCs took a short rest as they entered the keep, but spent the hour chatting up the townsfolk...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

If you did those things because you couldn't deal with class/rules/story elements, then yes. And dont get me wrong, sometimes the lazy way is the best way, if everyone at the table agrees. Lazy is OK as long as it serves the purpose to move the game forward. I use lazy house rules sometimes...
