D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

I think he was referring more to the arbitrary limit on the number of short rests allowed and the DM's gap of 8hrs between short rests, not the time that a short rest consumes.

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

I meant the house rules to healing and resting and classes and equipment and such that this DM imposed, not the stuff that would come with the setting proper. And the DM never explicitly stated a reason for the short rest limitation like as you describe. I would like to imagine its something...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

And lets not kid ourselves here. Any one of us could run a Ravenloft game with 0 rules changes and still run it 'Gritty' and 'dangerous' and 'gothic'. House rules like this are a lazy/ignorant DMs tool.

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

I think you just proved my point. The OP is concerned about these issues, passionate about playing... and you called him a whiner. His DM essentially sucker punched him and you are telling him to suck it up, or move on.

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

I feel as if there is a bit of victim shaming going on here. The OP was seeking advice on a tough situation, and instead many lambasted him for his choices of character, wording, etc. the OP made the character. It was approved by the DM. The backstory (if even read) was approved by the DM...

D&D 5E (2014) Modules and lack of player engagement...

I am writing a large 5E module and I have done exactly that. Ive included a blurb for groups of backgrounds with hooks.

Roll20 publishes Game Percentages... Pathfinder at 25%

Wow. PFRPG is definitely hemorrhaging players to 5E. No one can argue that correlation, its right there. It doesnt seem like 5e will be a fly by night phenomena.

Mistwell, You put far too much work into that. I concede out of respect for your tenaciousness.

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

I felt the OP was trying to establish a baseline to compromise with the DM, who completely shut down the discussion 'if you don't like it walk'. The OP clearly wanted to be in the game, and was trying to find a solution to make that happen. DM didn't seem interested in listening. I say we...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

From the OP: The DM started us with virtually no money and no gear....no armor, no weapons, nothing.

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

What if the OP was playing a fighter? What would the reaction be then to a DM who said you start off naked. Oh and you only get 1 hit die back per long rest. And your primary abilities like action surge or second wind are fine, but since I am limiting short rests, you wont be able to use them...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

I dont think the OP ever stated he expected 'free' short rests. Just the ability to use them normally (instead of with the DM limitation). There is no reasonable reason, in my opinion, to limit short rests to a number of times a day. Monsters can be smart, there can be patrols. But if the PCs...

    [5e] Adventure Cards!

Love em! Some additions: For the Hoard! You must present this card before the DM announces the contents of a treasure chest. Double all coinage in that chest. Hidden Cache Find one extra, level appropriate treasure parcel in the next encounter/room. If there are no existing treasure...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

That sentence right there... BAD DM. Especially combined with his "you used the word gimped you must be a power gamer" type of attitude. As I said before, Bad DMs restrict and pro-act... cant cast this spell, monks are broken i dont allow them, druids cant wildshape, i dont like to figure out...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

Short rests are built into the core game and are RAW... you are basically saying the system isn't balanced out of the book. I disagree with you on that.

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

Run far away from this DM and do not look back. I assume hes doing this either 1)because he does not have a grasp on the rules and feels he cant adequately control his players, or 2)to fit in with the 'feel' of this particular game. In either situation it screams BAD DM. Bad DMs say no to...

D&D 5E (2014) Is it possible to have a good-aligned final boss in a good campaign?

Chaotic good does what is necessary. The larger the necessity the more ambiguous the morality becomes. In the real world most of the famous 'villains' do not consider themselves evil at the time, merely trying to bring order, or sense to the world. Even mythology has examples, for example in...
