    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on 5th…

With the exception of the Artificer, introduced in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, 5e hasn't expanded classes beyond the 12 introduced in the PHB: Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard. However, they have expanded on those by...

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

Those of us who liked 4e but also happily moved on to 5e don’t generally spend much time talking about how 5e is not like 4e.

OSR BECMI, how do you say it?

I say “beck-mi” in my head when I see it written out, but have never had an occasion to say it out loud. Back in the day, we just called it D&D, distinct from AD&D. Which brings me to own personal, private peccadillo. I hate when people refer to B/X or BECMI or RC as a whole as “Basic D&D.” It...

    D&D General Maps on D&DBeyond

Bumping this to note that now tokens can be renamed in Maps! They now have about 90% of the functionality I need and want. All that's left is a ping tool and a draw tool so my players can set out their AOE effects. Everything beyond that is gravy.

WotC Roll for Combat got to try the 3D vtt and he seems to like it. Live streaming now.

Well, the choices do matter if you're playing online, or utilizing DDB character sheets. Rolls from character sheets and encounters assigned to particular campaign show up in that campaign's gamelog. You're kind of a special case in that you're not using any of that. So, the easiest way to do...

WotC Roll for Combat got to try the 3D vtt and he seems to like it. Live streaming now.

Choose any of them. It doesn't mean anything. There's no automatic maps loaded, no automated encounters, or characters. Nothing to set up, or delete. It just opens the Maps app under that name. And that name is only a) to provide a link for other people to view the Maps for your game, b) to...

WotC Roll for Combat got to try the 3D vtt and he seems to like it. Live streaming now.

What set up? A Campaign is essentially just a folder for characters and encounters. You click on “Create a Campaign,” give it a name, click on “Create Campaign,” and you’re done. You’re taken to a page where you can launch Maps. You can even skip giving it a name by clicking on “Create a...

    D&D 5E (2024) The 2024 Core D&D Rulebooks Are Coming In May

It's too bad the 4e Essentials didn't do better*, because I quite liked that format. If I had my druthers, I'd do something like this, with all books being 9 x 6 inch paperbacks that retail for $25-$30: Basic Rulebook - the rules plus the Core Four races and classes Player's Handbook - Box set...

WotC Third party, DNDBeyond and potential bad side effects.

That's certainly where my disconnect is, because I can't even imagine what "stewards of the hobby" is supposed to mean. I mean, "stewards of the D&D game," I can get my head around. Honor its long history, try to make the current version the best version for today's market, keep it in print. I...

D&D General Why Is D&D Successful?

Another factor here is how class design ramps up complexity. You get a feel for your class at Level 1 with only two primary features, then another feature at Level 2, and then your subclass at Level 3. You've got a fairly complex character now, but new players haven't been bombarded with too...

D&D 3.x Ben Riggs shares Sunless Citadel sales numbers

I think the story that he wants to write is that after years of mismanagement by people who weren't even gamers, D&D fell in the hands of people who were gamers, who loved D&D, and were also savvy business people. And those people brought about a new edition of D&D and a role-playing renaissance...

D&D 5E (2014) Is Grapple forced movement supposed to care about carrying capacity?

Anyone with any experience in grappling will tell you, it's not about how much you can lift, but how you can manipulate the opponent's body to make them go where you want them to.

D&D General "I have Played in or Run a Campaign Set in the Forgotten Realms" (a poll)

I never played in the Forgotten Realms until I got 5e. Since then, I've run LMoP for different groups. I played Hoard of the Dragon Queen in FR, but when I ran it myself, we reskinned it to be set in Krynn. Princes of the Apocalypse and Out of the Abyss I ran straight as being in FR. Curse of...

D&D General Ben Riggs Shares 2001 D&D 3.0 Core Book Sales.

Just recently, the binding broke on my 5e Monster Manual. The ironic thing is, it's hardly seen use since I got it in 2014. I've flipped through it a few times, but since most of my play has been online, I haven't actually needed to refer to it over the years. Meanwhile, the 1e and 2e books I...

    D&D General Maps on D&DBeyond

It is indeed super easy to use. After years of struggling to scale maps in Roll20, I was ready to make the switch just from that first functionality at launch.

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

IMO, all of the subsequent reasons you listed played a part. There's no one silver bullet to explain why people bounced off of 4e. There were multiple issues, any one of which might have been possible to mitigate, but which altogether hindered 4e like a 4e monster festooned with conditions. To...

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

This assumes the D&D and Agon or Torchbearer are all targeting the same marketing segments. The reality is that virtually all RPG design is in reaction to D&D, in as much as they target parts of the RPG market that want something other than D&D. And within those smaller segments of the market...
