D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

Thanks. A couple thoughts. 1. While not particularly surprised BG3 has nudity, I was not expecting “visible genitalia.” Which…yeah, that’s gonna get censored in Japan. 2. Jeez Louise, that article took forever to get to the point. Has no one at Screen Rant heard about “burying the lede?”

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

Source? I’m hard-pressed to think of what would be acceptable in the North American market that would not be acceptable in the Japanese one.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Update: 2024 Rulebooks & Survey Results

Very true. But my point is, the Tarrasque, which will also not be seen in the vast majority of tables, has an AC of only 25, the highest in the game. That’s the difference between bounded accuracy, and the more unbound skill system.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Update: 2024 Rulebooks & Survey Results

I don't agree that bounded accuracy, per se, has anything to do with skill rolls, or an expected success rate thereof. The idea, in as much as it was discussed during 5e's design and playtest, was that AC and attack bonuses would not progress beyond a certain level. The intention being to avoid...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Update: 2024 Rulebooks & Survey Results

With respect, we're getting into non-generalizable to the greater D&D-playing population territory here. The rules do not allow for "fall back options". The player can choose to roll, or they can choose to take the standard set of scores, but they can't choose the standard set of scores after...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Update: 2024 Rulebooks & Survey Results

Another edit to my post: I said that the standard set of scores was the average spread of 4d6-drop lowest. After double-checking AnyDice's analysis of 4d6-drop lowest, I should note that it is a very slightly tuned down spread. The actual average spread is 16, 14, 13, 12, 10, 9. So, from a...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Update: 2024 Rulebooks & Survey Results

The example player chooses the array, i.e., set values of 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8. Point buy is explicitly explained as a variant only available at the DM’s option. Edit: We should be clear with our terms here. In the entirely-optional-at-DM's-discretion point buy, characters start with...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Update: 2024 Rulebooks & Survey Results

Just to clarify, 4d6-drop lowest is given first in the "Determine Ability Scores" section, and then the 15-14-13-12-10-8 array is given for "if you want to save time or don't like the idea of randomly determining ability scores." At the end of the section, after the example of "Bob" creating...

D&D General Why I Love Rolling Up Characters

I think D&D is built well for it in most editions, unless you’re rolling 3d6 in order for AD&D, which 1e says you shouldn’t do. But yes, absolutely, Traveller pushes many of the same buttons!

D&D General How Do You "Roll Up" Ability Scores?

OD&D and B/X used 3d6 in order, and that was also the default of 2e. But 1e specifically noted that it was not appropriate for AD&D, and gave a number of methods aimed at providing high scores, the most conservative of which was 4d6 drop lowest. Unearthed Arcana doubled down with a system that...

D&D General Why I Love Rolling Up Characters

So, funny thing. I was procastinating taking a break from a big translation job, and started putzing around with D&D Beyond, randomly rolling up characters (4d6-drop lowest, in order) just for the fun of it. Unbeknownst to me, but beknownst to many of you, just around then a big debate broke out...

Max at 1st level, then player’s choice of roll or average each subsequent level.

    D&D General Maps on D&DBeyond

From what they said in the video, I think it’s more the former than the latter. They stress they want to create something simple, fast, and easy to use, without bogging down the user with too many bells and whistles.

    D&D General Maps on D&DBeyond

Probably not, since you need a Master Tier subscription to access the Map Browser. But as I understand it, the maps will still be associated with your account, and thus the campaign, so if you resubscribe, you’ll have access again. And if I understand correctly, if you share the adventure...

    D&D General Maps on D&DBeyond

If you click on “Manage Characters” in the Encounter Builder, you can remove any characters you don’t want included in the Encounter. I created a character called “The Party” just because I wanted a token for wilderness maps, removed it from the Builder, and have had no problems because it...

    D&D General Maps on D&DBeyond

Here's the update to the road map. (Statuses are all by me.) I like what I see so far, and would not be averse to running a game on this, but I think my players will want at least a draw tool before they are willing to switch from AboveVTT. Tool Improvements Add a pointer tool and draw tool...

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

Questions of popularity aside, there's quite a difference in latent goodwill when you're replacing an 10 year old edition than when you're pushing out the third set of core rulebooks and second completely different version of the game in 7 years.

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

When talk of 4e's marketing comes up, I always think back to this blog post by Jeff Grubb about the transition from 2nd Edition to 3rd Edition. With this kind of background, it is no surprise that when it was 4e's turn, the designers were, let's say, dismissive of what they perceived as...

D&D General How Do You "Roll Up" Ability Scores?

In 5e, 4d6 drop lowest, placed. In B/X, 3d6 in order, but if you already have a class picked out, I allow the Prime Requisite to be chosen.
