    Ceramic DM/Short Story Smackdown '08

I've been having an old skool kind of month thus far, so I figured I'd go with the flow :)

    Ceramic DM/Short Story Smackdown '08

I'd be willing to judge, if you still need one. It's been a while, but I think I remember how it all goes (The last time I judged was, I think, late 2003 or so)

    D&D+Firefly=DragonFly

Mind flayer. Miska is all subtle power, cruelty and presence, rather than brute strength. Dragon is too imposing and physically challenging, Lich just screams raw power thanks to the fact that they've been transformed. Mind Flayer gets right down to the insidious creepiness and ruthlessness...

    GenCon files Chapter 11

I can't speak for the other two, but GenCon Australia is a lisencee rather than a convention directly controlled by Gen Con LLC. It's funded by a local Australian company and run by a local team of organisers, so it shouldn't be affected by this too much.

    I Bopped Him!

The worse was always "Chomp chomp, dude." It ended up becoming a catchphrase at our table for a while...

    Best Non-Wizards 3.0/3.5 products?

Advanced Bestiary from Green Ronin. Easily the most used game book I've ever owned, despite the fact that I'd only had it for a year when my campaign died.

D&D 4E Sight unseen - what are your plans for 4E?

I'm about 85% likely to convert over. At this point I'm probably one of those gamers that WotC is actively trying to bring back with the selling points of 4e - I stopped running regular games because of the workload and the lack of excitement.

    Awake, My Unthread Minion!

Sometimes it bugs me, sometimes it freaks me out, and sometimes its cool to see stuff coming back from the dead. The only time I really get irritated is when someone necromances a 'Hey, what should I do with my next session" type question a year or two later.

How Do I Make This Interesting?

Keep the trail of clues relatively simple, unless you've got a party of folks who really like solving mysteries and making big leaps in logic. I normally find that the key to a fun RPG mystery game isn't the train of clues you need to follow, but how interesting the individual scenes that...

    Prestige Classes

I've recently gone from using them sometimes to using them lots, simply because the characters have hit the level where random mooks will have levels in the prestige classes associated with the organization they're currently battling. The characters themselves are about evenly split on the PrC...

How often did/do you use modules in oAD&D?

About 30%. The modules were used when they were there, but we gamed a lot and they were hard to track down.

    Favorite Polyhedron d20 Minigames

While I enjoyed and would run almost all the minigames I saw, Hi-Jinx was the pure distilled awesome that saw me run an annual one-shot to coincide with our local group-watching of the Eurovision Song Contest. Everything else is largely on my to-run list, but that list is pretty damn long at...

When are rogues "really" necessary anymore? if at all...

There will always be people who want to play skillmonkeys; Rogues are still enourmously popular in my games despite the availability of other options.

M&M: How does a villain get a word in edge-wise?

The other general advice for singular villains is to give them a Defense and Toughness (but not impervious toughness) save about three or four points higher than the average PL of the PC's they're facing. Since they'll face five or six times the number of attacks they'll make, you can afford to...

M&M: How does a villain get a word in edge-wise?

Let the villain monologue, tell the players they'll get a hero point for playing along with the genre. The giving-away of Hero Points is, in my experience, the best way to keep a villain going - it not only makes them tougher to beat, but the eventual solutions tend to be a little more...

    Looking for the CGW life

If only it were that easy :) One of the things that's held things up was my computer going belly-up towards the end of last year. When it went, it went in the most dramatic way possible, and it took my primary back-up (a pair of USB drives) with it. I shrugged and went for the back-ups of my...

A magic using pilot. Tell me what you think.

My comments on a quick, half-asleep read-through: Sans setting description, my first reaction is that it seems a little more appropriate to a Wierd War's style WW1 setting than anything else. It's kind of hard to guage the abilities without these kind of details though - this will be far more...

    Looking for the CGW life

I would say 'We'll be back soon,' but every time I've said that in the last twelve months real life has hammered me into a state of catatonia or the PDF industry has undergone some major changes that required a quick re-think of the way CGW opperated. But we will be back. And I plan to have...

    Mooks - a good idea?

I'm with the folks who disagree with the 1 hp front - mooks should be easy to plow through, but such a low hp total basically ensures that there's no challenge there for the players. You're better off just giving them a breif vignette about how the massacre the assembled horde, then moving on...
