    I was doing something like this in my 4th days-a moderate rest of 1 hour would give you two healing surges if you had none,one healig surge if you had more than one left or get back your lowest level used daily.it worked fine

    SoD, how can we accommodate everyone?

    Im not sure any of this needs to be a core rule,you could easily publish a few monsters(cockatrice,basalisk,medusa and catablebus)that feature a SoD and then it would be up to the DM to use them.Leave them out of published moduals and make them rare,they should be in any case.

    What I did to make rolling to crit more palateble,I had a non confermed crit chart and a confermed crit chart,I havent updated this into pathfinder but I think I will.
