Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

I mean, honestly, this seems an odd argument. If you consider deriving your mechanics and concepts from other games immoral, that probably declares most of the RPG market immoral; very few just lept fully formed from their designers heads without some elements coming from prior art, and most of...

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

"Light on" does not mean "nonexistant" last time I looked.

Yeah, back in the day when Steve Perrin looked at an obviously RQ derived game and said it seems oddly familiar, my response was "Well, it pays to steal from the best" and he just grinned.

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

Well, that's largely because the early Gygaxian D&D was pretty light on mechanics, especially outside of combat, in general.

Pathfinder 2E I played my first PF2e game this week. Here's why I'm less inclined to play again.

It can be even more procounced with a two-gun user because the reload times are so awful; even with talents its hard to get it better than three shots in two rounds.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Of course you are. You seem to think even collectively, the typical player group is less trustworthy to make house rules decisions than a GM is. If you don't think that's badmouthing them, you've got a very privledged positon. I think your approach infantalizes the players, and yeah, I don't...

The difference is I don't have to badmouth most of the player populace to defend mine.

Pathfinder 2E I played my first PF2e game this week. Here's why I'm less inclined to play again.

I saw a lot of hell sent downrange via Chain Lightning by our chronic sorcerer player. Its one of the reasons I tend to roll my eyes when I hit the "spellcasters are only there to help the fighters" thing drop yet again.

Pathfinder 2E I played my first PF2e game this week. Here's why I'm less inclined to play again.

There are a few arcane spells that can be really punchy at their levels on a single target basis, but they aren't going to do those round after round. Like I said, I had some serious cleanup on a few occasions, but I also spent a lot of time going "You know, I'd have contributed to this fight...

And there's still that crowd control thing. A mage can end up putting more damage downrange than any fighter ever will; they just end up putting it in multiple targets usually (the usually is important, though). Gunslingers are weird to play (my last PF2e character was one). They can be very...

If your idea of "taking out half the opposition" is "clean up crew", I'd have to say that's a sign of "If I'm not the primary actor in taking down the big bad I'm nerfed" mentality.

I'm not the one saying that using player design can't work because they're selfish.

And I'm not seeing a single moral issue. All work is built on prior work in one fashion or another, creative, technological or (as RPGs are) combinations of the two. The question isn't whether you're using prior art; the question is whether you're bringing something new to the table while...

That's a good idea. It may well be that Malwarebytes is taking one look and noping me out of it. Hmmm. Apparently that isn't easy to do with the non-Enterprise version of Chrome without installing an extension.

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

Rules design is not functional IP for any purpose that matters in the hobby. Rules expression can be copyrighted, but rules themselves can't be. There's evidence they could be theoretically patented, but no one goes through the trouble of doing so as you'd need to do it with individual rules...

The players collectively having a veto power. That's why I said it requires thinking not only individual players aren't capable, but even that the majority is incapable. For that not to be true, you have to, at best, think the majority of the group won't bother to engage with the houserule...

Does Your Game Have Random Encounters?

I'm not hostile in principal to random encounters, but can't say I've used them for anything for many years. Of course a fair number of games I run they'd just make no sense in.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Hey, has anyone been getting some odd error messages from this thread (and only this one)? I'd gotten the impression it was indicating a broken ad, but its strange its only coming up here. Edit: And then right after I post this I get it in another thread. Carry on. I'll mention it in Meta.
