Sword Coast Legends Survey; Plus Ranger Feedback Results!

Another concept that got rolled into the present 5e Ranger that we don't talk about much is the Arcane Archer. They took it out of the playtest and replaced it with Ranger spells that use arrows. So the Ranger isn't just carrying the weight of the survivalist, nature-paladin, and beastmaster...

Sword Coast Legends Survey; Plus Ranger Feedback Results!

Above-and-beyond survival abilities. Not like, tree-huggy (necessarily), but some bona-fide commando, trapper, frontiersman stuff. I'm alright with that being the distinguishing feature. To the point that if everyone could get a feat at 1, AND there was a beastmaster class, I'd be alright with...

Sword Coast Legends Survey; Plus Ranger Feedback Results!

I meant I want the thing the guy I quoted suggested.

Sword Coast Legends Survey; Plus Ranger Feedback Results!

Everyone is getting real snarky with "ranger fans are basic" and "they just want drizzt" when really, all I want is this. As for the people who say that anyone can do nature stuff, that is BS, because as soon as they put X into a Ranger class feature it is, by implication, no longer a...

    November's SAGE ADVICE Is Here!

It isn't a weapon at all, so it doesn't even work with it. The ruling is really just for hitting people with a shield when you don't have a weapon.

    D&D 5E (2014) Question about Rogues

Someone got burnt by a misread and now their concept is illegal. That sucks. If your "cloak and sword" rogue is important to you, you might ask your DM for a break. You are looking at +1 damage, here (assuming you don't wield it in both hands), and that is not a huge deal. It is equivalent to an...

Here's VIN DIESEL Playing That D&D Game!

He was the new guy in a lot of ways. I thought he did well, considering.

Last D&D Survey Results In! Plus What's Up With The Ranger?

Me. I suggested the make the beast companion and magic options subclasses with a third, martial subclass as well. I think if they shift more power into the subclass choice they could make a beast that is more satisfying. So, for the magic class, I put Other: A magic sublcass, similar to a...

    Vitality Dice: A damage variant

This gets into a whole new debate about AC, because Defense for unarmored characters is just like AC and in RAW heavily armored characters don't add Dex to AC, which rustles a lot of feathers. I didn't add that part, it just got translated over. I feel like adding Dex to Defense for heavily...

    Vitality Dice: A damage variant

Sorry, I guess I should have replied to this one rolled into my other reply. The only thing I haven't addressed yet here is level+con dodge dice. It makes sense, but it multiplies early survivability by 2-3 in some cases, on top of wounds, which almost doubled it already.

    Vitality Dice: A damage variant

The idea is that they represent your stamina and footing. It seems like they should come back pretty fast. Do you think it's too fast conceptually or mechanically? I am pretty sure this is all the same as I have it. You can use as many VD as you have available. Pretty much the only I didn't...

    Vitality Dice: A damage variant

Oh, I see. I copied it out of my google doc. I'll see if I can fix it.

    Vitality Dice: A damage variant

I'm thinking about adding some immediate and lingering effects if you take too many wounds at once, like being stunned immediately and then having a problematic wound that takes time or effort to heal. So the Con damage represents your overall health and is affected by wounds, but there may be...

    Vitality Dice: A damage variant

Thanks! Yeah, that is a good point to adjust things up and down. To me, my first concern was nailing down some of the ambiguity surrounding damage, but gritty healing is something I'd like to improve. The healing, right now, is a little messy all around. You are right, but I decided to move...

Fighting Styles: One Weapon, No Shield, and the fighter and rogue

I worked on something similar here, and the numbers came out close but a little different: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?467595-It-s-not-the-size-it-s-how-you-use-it-(Versatile-Weapons)/page2&p=6692879&viewfull=1#post6692879

    Vitality Dice: A damage variant

This is a rough draft. I'd like feedback on the variant, but I'd like to avoid justifying its existence, but hey, it's your life I can't control you.

    Vitality Dice: A damage variant

Optional Rule: Vitality DiceSome DMs find hit points bothersome. A fighter’s high hit points supposedly indicates he can survive a fireball, a troll’s rending claws, and a one‐hundred‐foot fall by virtue of not only his toughness but also by his experience and skill. Counter-intuitively, the...

D&D 5E (2014) Artist Mike Schley running a sale on all digital artwork (including adventure maps)

Why would I want my players parading around on a whiteboard when there are beautifully drawn maps? Isn't that kinda the point? "Man, guys, I wish you could see this map. It's awesome. Totally worth $6. Anyway, here's some black lines. Have fun imagining how awesome it is." Just cover the parts...

D&D 5E (2014) Did anyone try beastmaster with no action for beast attack?

What if beasts could be commanded to fight an enemy, in which case they helped/hindered/dodged until they were ordered to do otherwise, but they also had a special attack ability that recharged on a 5-6? So every three turns or so they attack, otherwise they help, and then later as the BM gets...

    Fiddling with Fighters

I don't understand why we have a three-page thread about this, you just take the tool proficiency for instruments and choose violin. Then, you either choose the fighter class or invite one to the party and you're good to go.
