    D&D 4E A question for 4e players and DMs (about 5e)

Why don't you just use Basic 5e for a night and see how it goes?

AD&D 1E Ye Olde Ranger of Editions Past (1E-4E)

In the playtest that decision point, between horde-breaker and colossus-slayer, was called favored enemy. Considering that, I actually like the way it is in the book, since it is just the non-combat extension of that choice.

AD&D 1E Ye Olde Ranger of Editions Past (1E-4E)

In 3e/3.5 rangers got pets at level 4. In 4e there were multiple rangers, the one from 4e Essentials got a spell for each utility power (in common with the assassin from that book), which I thought worked very well for what it was.

Psionics Survey Results: Generally Positive But More Work Needed

Are they only 5 levels? I thought that was just for the playtest.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Another New Ranger Variant

I didn't say "where did these choices go" I lamented that they changed the name away from favored enemy. I know they are still there. I thought it was brilliant that your favored enemy informed your fighting style instead of giving bland bonuses to a particular enemy.

D&D 5E (2014) Pets are unfeasible! Or not.

Page 92 of the DMG has some suggestions regarding followers, but yeah, I think you are right. I decided a while ago that if someone really wants a BM I'd just tell them to go hunter and have the beast be a "follower", essentially an NPC. People need to be more flexible with the idea of "focus"...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Another New Ranger Variant

Perhaps they're assuming that people will still take the average. With the generous rounding that 5e does on average HP increases, 1d12 and 2d6 both give 7 per level, which just means 2d6 has better recovery. To give the same effect and to avoid the problem you point out, they could just let you...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Another New Ranger Variant

I'm not sure why they moved away from the horde-breaker/giant-slayer decision point being cast as favored enemy like it was in the playtest. That seemed like a great solution to me.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Another New Ranger Variant

I am glad to see that they are still brainstorming the ranger, but I really don't like this incarnation. First, I don't like "the paladins of the forest" idea, because we already have forest paladins, and I don't think that the quintessential survivalist class should come with a baked-in...

    Fighter Archetype - Duelist

Am I missing a mechanism that reinforces this concept? I don't see anything about light or heavy armor.

D&D 5E (2014) It's not the size, it's how you use it (Versatile Weapons)

If you mean the Dueling fighting style, I like that idea, but it comes off a little strong. It would make it so you could get either +2 AC (shield) +2 damage, or +1 AC and +3 damage (since you get 1d10). The problem is defense+greatsword is already just +1AC and +2.5 damage. So this would be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Yes, Inspiration

Maybe +1d6 like action points? I don't know how that would interact with Bardic Inspiration though.

    D&D 5E (2014) Whack-a-mole gaming or being healed from 0 hp

I think I'll like (a) and (b) if it becomes an issue. Except... looking at the conditions, "dazed" isn't on there and straight-up "poisoned" is the only one that really comes close, but it doesn't really fit, does it? What about (c), a level of exhaustion, except it goes away after a short rest?

I refuse to accept this possibility into my worldview.

D&D 5E (2014) It's not the size, it's how you use it (Versatile Weapons)

So, thinking about it, I decided that we could probably get the job done with a fighting stlye, and we could probably get both the fencer and the versatile specialist in one go. Also, ideally it would be mechanically unique and not just a re-skin with identical stats to another option. Here is...

D&D 5E (2014) It's not the size, it's how you use it (Versatile Weapons)

1d8/1d10 is the damage for most versatile weapons, including longswords.

Jerry named those characters years ago. Mike is just now getting that there is a play on words. Scott realized it shortly after he heard them.

    D&D 5E (2014) Whimsy in your game?

To be clear, I am super interested in this storyline because of the whimsy (and the art style). I don't even like APs and I think I am gonna get this one.
