Yeah, the amulet interacts with the ring to pull you partially into the Bleak Gate so you can briefly interact with stuff over there, but there's a second spell - which only people on the other side have - to pull you the rest of the way.

Just stat up "swarm of zombies" with an appropriate CR. If an Nth level druid can have an animal companion with X hit points that does Y damage, well, an Nth level necromancer can have a swarm of zombies that does about the same. Yeah, it's flavored as a crowd of creatures filling a Huge space...

You could have the article be ghost-written by the PC's rival, and published in a different paper. Then the PCs can investigate, figure out who was behind it, and get the guy fired for a breach of journalistic ethics. You could have competing newspapers pushing different versions of the events...

Yeah, high level combats get exhausting. I'm not sure how I'd handle it differently if I wrote it today. I mean, you want the climax to involve some big battles, given the campaign's name, but I think I overdid it. Lord of the Rings didn't have the Battle of Pelennor Fields last multiple days...
