Although I agree with all the views expressed in this thread wouldn't PrC's take care of this? Usually PrC's allow a wider range of special abilities and class skills and some give more points then the "core" class of the character.

I agree with you there. Drow = crow sounds much more dark, more evil, more menacing then Drow = cow. Come on... who can be scared of an elf that rhymes with cow? :p :D Furthermore Drow have dark skin, Crows have dark feathers. Crows come in murders and Drow do a lot of murdering. So...

Just as the War of the Roses inspired GRRM for part of ASoIaF and that Robert Baratheon = Edward IV; the Targaryens might have been inspired by the Ptolemies of Egypt. Though AFAIK GRRM has not stated that Ptolemies = Targaryens; he has said that about Robert and Edward York.
