Exactly, and that's part of what keeps it fun! :) It also keeps it risky. When I ran the numbers a few years back on causes of PC death, "own party" was very high up the list (can't recall if it was first or second). This includes accidental deaths, intentional killings, fatal fumbles, and so...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Another option, which may or may not be available at any given time, might be to jump into an existing mid-to-high level campaign as a replacement for a player who had to bail for whatever reason (rolling up your own character, of course, not taking on the one the previous player left behind).

If you're just playing that one adventure, this is common: you roll up characters to the suggested level on the adventure cover. If you're looking to start a persistent campaign, however, that would be very uncommon. Persistent or ongoing or long-term campaigns nearly always start at 1st and...

If you didn't roll them in front of me, chuck 'em out and start over.

Fine, but boring. Where I want that as the default method of play all day long. If the game wasn't at heart a gamble, it wouldn't use dice. Predictability is boring. Stability is boring. Can't speak for you, but I ain't here to be bored. :)

Nah. If you're gonna have dice, put 'em to use. That, and not everyone is cut from the same cloth even in fantasy.

Boating? Either that's a typo (though I'm not sure of what) or you've hit a term I've never heard in this context. That said, the linear every-two-points bonus system does have its drawbacks. The U-curve bonuses of 0e and 1e do a much better job of reflecting the bell curve IMO; where those...

Are arrays really that much faster or simpler than rolling some dice? OK, the actual rolling of the six sets of dice takes maybe an extra minute. But after that it's a wash; you've still got six numbers to arrange into six stats just like with an array, only those numbers probably aren't the...

IME Clerics were generally pathetic at giving out damage, though they weren't bad at soaking it up. As a Cleric, my one good stat is going into Wisdom; a second good stat goes into Dex or Con. Strength is way down the list.

True, when the rogue has both had the time and taken the time to set up that one-shot stealth kill. That kind of time is rarely if ever available in fog-of-war melee, and most rogue-based fiction supports this.

Training still does those other useful things though, mostly around forcing downtime. That, and I really don't like the idea of every character levellng at once no matter what that character has actually done to earn that level.

That rather guts Con as a useful stat; how do you prop it back up? Also, your level 1 is my level 3. That said, to avoid 1-hit-point wonders at 1st level you could add body points - a small species-based die that everyone gets regardless of class, with a floor value set by Con score. How we...

What I said could apply just as well to a single combat. Fighters (in theory) have the best AC (unless their players are woefully unwise!) and the most hit points, thus can keep at it far longer than anyone else. Energizer bunnies. :)

Things the Report button is NOT for

In fairness I can think of a number of reasons why one might want to report one's own post, mostly involving drawing attention to technical issues and glitches if posting in Meta for some reason isn't possible.

I am making it fun, for those not playing casters and-or for those who don't want everything to be predictable. Fighters are the low-risk energizer bunnies that just keep on truckin'. Mages are the high-risk high-reward artillery. Other classes each fall somewhere between these in terms of...

Maybe, though there's a case for making a save by ducking behind cover or briefly dropping prone. Again, maybe; it's easy enough in most cases to just assume the moved target immediately moves right back to where it was unless the foe is pressing forward; in which case there's no relative...

Or keep all those spells but make them harder and-or riskier to use. Make AoE require aiming thus making it possible to hit allies. Make casting while within reach of melee functionally impossible. Make casting much easier to interrupt, with interruption risking a wild magic surge. And make...

And from here on it becomes a different game, different system, different rules, etc., in a different book called something like "D&D Mythic", to accommodate..... .....this. And it could go way beyond 20 if desired. I'm also not a fan of tiers; I'd rather the progression from any one level to...

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

You're assuming my intent is that everyone be consistently useful in combat. It's not. Combat (particularly melee) should be the warriors' place to shine, with others merely helping to a greater or lesser degree. Rogues don't fight well, their job is to keep watch and maybe sneak behind the...
