I think PbtA style games vs traditional games is an orthogonal discussion to simulationism. I lean toward the idea that the rules are the physics of the universe idea of simulationism. The debate here though between the two styles of games is a far bigger one because most DMs and players find...

I don't know how you do it so quickly. I think a lot of work done by DMs beyond the essentials is a labor of love. A DM can do a simple sandbox setting with no more detail than the module B2. For me it is important I know the fictional persons, human or otherwise, in the primary playing area...

This seems to be an assumption. Some people enjoy DM curated campaign settings and value what those DMs do to make the game good for them. Others prefer other things. A matter of taste will vary across different people.

I think if you present your campaign idea up front and any good DM would in my playstyle then it is the player who is behaving badly if he joins the campaign and then immediately demands to change the underlying theme. I think if the request is something not addressed in the "startup packet...

The word insistence doesn't strike me as a loose weak thing in the abstract. It comes across as a demand. Yeah I guess I just never had players who had the "insistent" personality type. My guess is that they are insistent occasionally in other aspects of their life but they just aren't in...

The kinds of players I look for are those who want to be invested in the world. They ask questions about the world before they come up with a character. I often have one on one meetings with players to help fill out their backgrounds. They tell me the kinds of ideas they have for their...

I'm probably one of those that think building a detailed campaign world is the way to go. That doesn't mean that word isn't reusable. So it's not 6 months per campaign necessarily. I will admit I have the world builder bug so I do it a lot more than others. Some people even use store bought...

I think good DMs are rare period. Well, if the DM goes to the trouble of building an extensive and deep campaign, I think we should at least respect that. And if a DM does not like something then he should absolutely ban it. Things which irritate and demoralize a DM are not helpful. The...

Okay this is something I can address I think. I don't agree that it done right is going to cause more harm and than good. I do think communication before the campaign starts is highly important. If you layout what your idea is and what your campaign is about then only those wanting that will...

This may be your point but it wasn't mine. But, I will say this. The GNS model is an attempt to extract playstyles from what exists and not to tell people what they should do. Basically build the sidewalks where people are walking. That means people don't know the terms but they know the...

My point stands given what you said. People can be something or some mix of something without knowing the technical terms. People had cancer before the term "Cancer" ever existed.

Depending on the person though that would be sim, narrativist, or gamist. You don't have to know the terms to enjoy what they stand for in a group.

Ptolus is a great product. The best of it's kind imho.

I think Ptolus is the best sandbox city ever done for a game. it is available in many editions now but originally in 3e.

This may have some elements of truth but honestly just give out a prospectus on your coming campaign. Detail out what you have modified per the default setting. If I want something one way or another, then I make sure everyone knows up front. If in theory I ever lack players then perhaps I'd...

It's as if you jumped into the middle of a conversation without knowing the context. This line of discussion is boring me so let's just drop it.

That has been true my whole gaming life which started in the late seventies. I think if you offer a good experience that at least some segment of the playerbase likes then you will have players. This is why I advise DMs to seeks games that make them excited because an involved DM who is happy...

Then someone should talk out about making your posts personal attacks. I wasn't talking about an internet message board. I was replying to your suggestion to "talk things out" During a game session, time is precious. So yes any out of game discussion over 5 minutes is wasting needless time...

Yes I agree but the recourse is to abandon that DM not argue him to death. I know your trivial example is an attempt to do something obvious and I accept it as that but in reality even a walls color could change in a magical setting.

No one said ghost the DM. You tell him you don't want to continue on in his campaign. The person I replied to just assumed the ghosting. And for the GAME of D&D, I don't find talking things out with the group to be very fruitful most of the time. It sure is a time sink though. You can...
