    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Well I can't speak for 5e as I have not played it. But I think my struggles with 4e can't be greater in 5e having looked at the rules. I play a survival and logistics sort of game. I as DM have to do a lot of encounter modification to make it challenging but I usually can. Is it beginner...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

First I'm Emerikol not Emirikol. Second, it's not so much the work required as the fundamental concept of the DM being the ultimate arbiter in his campaign. There are many reasons why this is necessary in my style of play. One fact may be the amount of work the DM does, I'd say that is one...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

No. You've both found the others preference at least tolerable and I hope at least somewhat fun. I mostly DM so it is easier to get a game in my style. I don't think though I would like a lot of styles played here so it wouldn't be fun for me so I wouldn't do it. I'm not desperate for a...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

I prefer old school sandbox with a well developed world where the adventures are play skill based and resource management is important. This is the harder question. Why do I prefer vanilla bean ice cream more than chocolate fudge? Yes. No. They might shift if I'm playing a one off versus a...

D&D General Drow as in Cow or Drow as in Snow: Where did the Dark Elves Come From?

I think due to the black and white interiors I never paid much attention and didn't realize until later that they were black. Still long ago of course. I think darkness is ascribed to evil because more evil happens when it is dark. I think the tendency to have black hats be villains comes from...

I disagree even with that...they obviously aren't ascending as they were in 1978 but they are ascending relative to the 3e and 4e eras. Some new players are finding out that there is a way they like more when they play in an OSR game. It all goes back to preferences and people have different ones.

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Absolutely. Sandbox enables the DM to handle the level of detail he wants for the campaign.

Well it's 90%. Even DMs who do a lousy job of it are trying for it. It's one of the major goals of OSR play. There are others.

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Based on your example, I perceive you underestimated the OSR style of play's appeal. If there was a TOP 40, there would be some OSR hits playing on the radio. It wouldn't be the majority by any means but they'd have some TOP 40 slots. The amount of product available is astounding. It's the...

I don't think it is as rare as you think, the OSR movement is not tiny, but if you live in a small town and don't like online play it could be an issue.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

My experience too. In fact, the satisfaction is far higher because you accomplished something. You overcame real challenges and survived. I had a group that got to high level but around 12th they had a very narrow escape which is still remembered till this day.

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

I realize there are many ways to play. There is very much a make it up as you go style of play where the DM's input into the setting is deemphasized though not eliminated by any means. What many of you don't seem to ever understand is the opposite. The fact that many of us prefer a style...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

We are probably on opposite ends of this spectrum. Whatever they've done to try and mollify you have done nothing but ruin the game for me. There is a difference between magic and a social skill. The former in D&D is like pulling the trigger on a modern pistol. It's going to work most of...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

So far so good. This is traditional D&D. Some might call it old school now. First I agree. I don't care if my style makes someone vomit. Helps me identify who I want to avoid in my games. But, it is more polite to say "I think or this makes ME feel a certain way..." than to say "This is...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Well that will depend on the situation and context of the adventure you are going through. If you are raiding humanoids, then no alerting them with a torch may not be for the best. If you are exploring a musty tomb unopened for centuries then yes torches all the way.

The light of a torch will warn most enemies. Far better to not alert them by using darkvision.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Okay. I didn't say it wasn't in the rules so much as it wasn't really a practical worry. If you let your character die 18 times then your character deserves permadeath or your DM's career does. At low levels it is but at about 5th level on, most groups can get a raise dead and eventually even...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

For my players who were skilled, dying 18 times was pretty unthinkable. Like I said, on average it might be 2 or 3 times in an entire campaign but there were people who didn't die at all.
