In a fantasy world filled with magic and miraculous beings, will the religious concepts of the locals be completely different from the human of Earth?

The short answer is yes but there are some caveats. Most people can't travel to other planes. Is it really true that clerics lose their powers for failing their god? Maybe clerics just have a different approach to summoning their magic and they ascribe it to their god but in fact it's just...

3e with 1e feel. Some ideas.

I've long thought that the 3e chassis is a good chassis despite my preference in many ways for 1e's way of thinking on certain things. I can see some good though in all editions. BAB, pretty much 3e. Backgrounds, yes. A background will give you some skills, a contact or two, maybe membership...

Interested in checking out non-D&D fantasy "old school" ttrpgs

I confess I do not like d100 games. Too much granularity for me. GURPS also falls in that category. It's been around since the 80's at least. GURPS 3e came out 1988.

GURPS Fantasy / Dungeon Fantasy (and beyond)

I like GURPS a lot too. For anything but fantasy it is a no brainer. For fantasy I vacillate between wanting to run a D&Desque game and GURPS. As a DM, I love the power GURPS gives to GMs to build a world. I love the ability to "build" your ruleset for your world. You can make every world...

Homebrew What makes for a perfect base hub for adventures?

What a great topic! I hate to just say "yes" but I do believe there are many good starting points. The tiny hamlet is almost stereotypical. I'd lump Hommlet and Keep on the Borderlands in this category. It's a classic for a reason. It is small enough that PCs can grow to be significant...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I didn't find it that hard since all of WOTC's campaign worlds defy their own position. In fact, my approach just stabilizes those worlds so they make sense. I've thought it though extensively and a world with verisimilitude is important to me. If you way works for you then that is great.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I just undid the bind by changing the level commonality in the world.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I never really bought into the "most" people are zero level conceit. I agree it is the official viewpoint. I think that view though makes the world nonsensical and when you see the actual worlds they created, the reality is far different. Every three levels is another band of commonality...

AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

I think as a group we never used any of the new classes but I liked some of the other stuff. I don't remember any widespread rejection of it though. In those days, D&D games were often the creations of the DMs in many ways. We removed what we disliked and added something if we felt there was...

Citing the Deep Magic: An Interview with Lew Pulsipher

Lewis Pulsipher is one of my favorite contributors here. Thanks for the insights. Oh by the way if that photo is recent you look way younger than 74.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I was really happy to see dragons get a boost. A dragon causes a kingdom to fall. It should be one of the most powerful creatures alive. A challenge for a high level party. 3e boosted them even more I think.

Worlds of Design: The Great Divide

As for novels, I like suspense and tension for sure but I don't need explosions all the time. I loved LOTR. It seemed full of suspense to me. I like characters that realistically change over time. It's one reason I love the movie Casablanca.

Worlds of Design: The Great Divide

I think most of my groups lean strongly vicarious but it is a continuum. We like immersion though more so in building their story as the game progresses than in elaborate backstories. I've pushed for backstories but my players do only what I require of them.

D&D 5E (2024) 5e GMs: Do/Have/Would You Start Above 1st Level? (Note: Cannot change your vote.)

In my gamist way of thinking, I always thought characters started at a high level were not earned. Yes I know for some that sounds weird but that is what it is. I would though allow high levels for a one shot or some non-campaign sort of thing.

D&D General Eberron D&D Setting Explained

I never judge a product by the effort. I judge it by my own enjoyment or by how much I learned. Why do I care if a person did it with ease or struggled all night.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Fighters were pretty devastating. Even at high levels they could drop a magic user in one round most of the time. They never got tired or ran out of "powers".

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

I'm 57, I remember those films but I'd heard of LOTR before I heard of those specifically. I went to the library very regularly when really young but mostly did Hardy Boys and then got into Isaac Asimov. So you could say my now lifelong interest in the fantasy genre coincided with D&D. I may...

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

I'm saying that any book's popularity rises and falls over time and that D&D sent a lot of people out to buy the LOTRs in the late 70's and 80's. Just like the movies no doubt sent people out to buy the books. I'm not saying Tolkien was unheard of prior to D&D. I am saying it popularized it...

D&D General Eberron D&D Setting Explained

It's a nice overview. I don't care whether AI did it or not. I'm not sure why anyone does.

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

And I disagree if by ask you mean transfer the information and not use the specific word. My groups want to know if someone is a fighter, rogue, wizard, cleric, etc... They will try to discern that information in game. They might say "What are they?" when asking about race. They may not say...
