I read that as a child so maybe that is it! Thanks.

Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

I think for me the personalities and perspective of the elves and dwarves are my heaviest Tolkien influence. I have switched up their cultures in many ways but there is always a touch of Tolkien in them all.

Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

This is funny because I've always liked Minotaurs as an intelligent race. Even a seafaring one. I think I got that from the basic set world when I was young.

D&D 5E (2014) A Middling DM Runs Curse of Strahd

I still own and have played the original I6 from 1983. It was ground breaking in terms of art and layout. I've had two groups go through the module.

Would the roll represent all factors involved in coming to a decision on success? If some factor is not considered then why is the roll determinative? It has to include all factors at least in the abstract.

Evil Drow Statblocks to Return in Forgotten Realms Rulebooks Later This Year

I think WOTC is blind to the views of many who play D&D. It's like they live in a bubble and HASBRO wants profit but doesn't understand the impact of WOTC management decisions. And yes, anything can be changed but it can also just not be bought at all.

D&D General 70% Of Games End At Lvl 7?

I think it's right. I had one campaign where the players reached 17th level. It was my longest running. Ran like ten years. Yeah advancement was slow. I had another make it to 12th and another to 8th. So I am spread all over the place. The 8th was 4e and I was just over it as a system.

D&D General I finally like non-Tolkien species for PCs

I doubt they'd ever get rid of humans for obvious reasons but I do think more thematic settings where every single race does not have to be included is a good idea. I feel like there are so many now that including them all makes the world feel off for me.

I've never heard that word before but I'm glad there is a word for it. I don't play 5e but I always played diegetic in the past if you mean conceptually diegetic. For example, do casters know about spell levels and slots. I might reflavor the names but the concept absolutely would be known in...

I do like a lot of variety myself but variety doesn't always mean everything. It would have to be very thematic to my game to go away from that idea.

Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

Sounds like an awesome career. Glad to see a fantasy reader get into literature. I liked that aspect of the game but mostly from the racial angle. I'm probably a four class kinda guy on that end. Yeah, I've very rarely ran the big bad evil sort of game, like once. I prefer open world...

I will also add that as DM, when I am thinking about an idea but haven't fleshed it out that much, I ask potential players what they think. I might even ask if they have any campaign flavors they've really been wanting to try out as a player. I might do this as a campaign is wrapping up. Do...

Let me give you an example of a good player. I had detailed a pantheon of God in my campaign world. One player chose to be a cleric of that particular God. I had some stuff detailed out for that God but not everything. The player asked if he could flesh out some stuff. I said sure but let...

That would depend on how central to my campaign the dwarves are. If I've detailed out every tribe, because they factor majorly in my campaign then yes I might hesitate. Of course, you can just assume they are some very small crackpot splinter group that lives in one region of the world. They...

Well, I didn't want to chime in on this specific because it would make me seem intolerable in general. If it is in the packet that I sent you head of time, then coming to the table wanting to change it is a no go for me. Just don't come to the table. I'm not forcing anyone into a campaign. I...

Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

I think Tolkien was a massive influence but not the only one. Wargaming was a major influence too. The Dying Earth. Lots. I'm sure Appendix N covers many and they likely contributed to different degrees. Still the traditional races seem to come right out of Tolkien.

I think the burden is on the player and if no compromise can be reached then the player leaves or accepts the DMs decision. This is of course the last recourse.

I didn't say that about narrative games. I do think DMs should be upfront during the recruitment stage. I like to put out something with all houserules and campaign details ahead of time. Everyone should do that I think. No. I am saying that a well detailed world done in advance by the DM...

I don't think even with elves it would be that big a deal. There really is an expectation amongst players of my playstyle that the DM is presenting a campaign that could include brand new races as well as exclude some standard races. Same for classes or anything else. D&D is a toolkit though...

I don't think so. Ptolus prepped for publication is 1000 pages but a DM could have that sort of knowledge without the level of written detail. DMs can use shorthand notes. This sounds great for you. For me it wouldn't work and I wouldn't enjoy it. If I found it tolerable as a game, I'd still...
