D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

To me, this is not something I would do for fun. If I ran a game in this instance it would be me just running a game to help them. It would be very similar to me running a game for a bunch of twelve year olds. I'd have to have some motivation besides "having fun" to do it. I think there is...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

In a game, inside a campaign setting, I don't see much difference between final authority and absolute authority. It's limited because the players can walk. It's limited because the DMs authority is inside the setting and nowhere else. He can't make you eat a turkey sandwich for lunch. So...

The Akashic! There was a class in Arcana Unearthed (Evolved) that tapped into the Akashic.

I think he means that the setting should drive the types of character created. The setting should not be driven by the characters created.

I agree but for me the PHB is it. A new book of classes and races are optional even if put out by WOTC. I agree with you that they should let you know early. As a player, is there no onus on the player to talk with the DM if they have some deal breakers? Now I agree the DM should communicate...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

See for me, someone insistent on playing a Wookie Jedi in a Star Trek game would be a red flag. It's not that I couldn't come up with something but I seriously doubt they'd be satisfied and I think they'd disturb the people who showed up to play Star Trek. I don't play those kinds of games...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

I think somethings get mixed up in the discussion. I'm firm on in game discussions about a rules adjudication but it can be discussed after the session. I am open to discussing the campaign setting before we start and if a players idea can be integrated then it might get into the game. The...

People will work hard for something that they are passionate about but they won't feel motivated if it is just meh to them.

No. I don't ever say the question is wrong. Maybe it something the DM won't find that challenging to integrate. It just depends. I would not suggest it if I got a session 0 preplay packet that said the races allowed are A,B,C,D. I would pick one of those without question. There are a...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

This is a language thing of course but absolute authority is just having the final decision. It doesn't mean people can't try to convince you to change your mind. It just means a group can't force you. edit: typo

I find it almost essential so we just have different tastes there. As soon as I realize the DM doesn't really have a decently detailed world I don't have much hope for the campaign.

But you have to see that it is such a big set of options that not every campaign will include everything. I do think they should warn you ahead of time of course but if they didn't I don't see any way to fix the issue. Give you some gas money? I don't expect a DM to change their entire...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Well so you are saying that a player won't agree and is being disruptive but won't leave? I find that a bit hard to believe. In high school we'd have gang tackled him and beat him and then forcibly thrown him out. Nowadays, I call the police? I just can't imagine a player defiantly refusing...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Unless the DM says otherwise. Like people keep saying, not every campaign world will have every race or class in D&D. Some will have other races and maybe another class who knows.

Yes I think we both thought bad meant evil vs bad meaning inexperienced or prone to mistakes. And I'm using evil here a little bit loosely. They are jerks or don't have the campaign's best intentions in mind.

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

I think he can so long as he accepts rule 0. If not then he is booted. Of course in my games he never shows up because he would see rule 0 clearly explained in the session 0 packet and not choose to play. Another good reason for that session 0 packet. I recommend it for all playstyles. It...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

I think practically my games operated this way but I attribute that to a shared consensus on rule 0 and the role of the DM. There was also a commitment to playing in the campaign the DM had designed.

No one on the planet is infallible. No one. DMs though will outperform players by a wide margin at ensuring what is best for the campaign overall.

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Okay let me be clear. When I said bad, I meant evil in the case of DMs. People who behave badly. Incompetence can be cured in anyone. I'm not talking about an incompetent DM. I'm talking about an evil one. I think the context of this debate though was unreasonableness not incompetence. An...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

You assume an adversarial stance between the DM and the players that I don't. Yes when I step into the monster I try to play it according to ITS persona. When I adjudicate though I am not doing so as the monster. I am again the DM. I think you just choose to misread and be obtuse instead of...
