How did you arrive at D&D?

I came into the RPG hobby through Vampire: The Masquerade, which I got into because of my interest in vampires at the time. I picked up AD&D Second Edition out of a need to explore what I called the "first RPG," and, as they say, the rest is history.

    Heroes of Battle

Ain't gonna need it. I already have Complete Warrior, which among other things, gives you adventure ideas for warriors, most of them focused on things done in a war.

    The Trap Thread

I've always been partial to the mechanical traps myself. I remember a Metroid comic in Nintendo Power that had Samus trip a pressure plate when exploring some ruin and then a spike comes out of the floor and punches right through her armor and through her shoulder. Serious ouch. Another good...

    Heavy Metal magazine

Perhaps the question would be, "which elements from the comics on Heavy Metal would one include?" I for one would love to see a fantasy empire with the cool skyships and the gothic armor that the Vampire Knights wear in the Requiem comic.

    Heavy Metal magazine

I've got several Heavy Metal mags at home. I have the issue with the start of REQUIEM: VAMPIRE KNIGHT, which promises to be a kickass little graphic novel. It's about a German soldier who dies in World War II and rises as a vampire in a seriously cool-looking gothic fantasy world called...

How would you make a fantasy Ironclad "go?"

I love the sea-beast idea. It'd be just like putting horses to work pulling wagons. The problem, of course, being that the sea-beast has to be strong enough to pull the ship, but not strong enough to sink it by diving below the surface and taking the ship with it.

Do you use the Hero's Journey (Campbell)

There was a thread on here a year or so ago called "Heroes: A Campbellian Perspective" that has a very cool article intended for the Star Wars GM Guide, but can be used in any kind of setting. Since I don't have access to the search function, someone who does might want to seek out that thread...

    Magic as a corrupting influence...

To expand on Reason's point earlier in this thread: I had a thread on here at least a year ago about a magical corruption system based on the Change for the Machines humanity loss rules for Cyberpunk 2020 on the Blackhammer Cyberpunk Project site. As far as I know, they're still online...

    Movie Quotes Fun!

Agent Smecker from Boondock Saints had a ton of hilarious quotes from the movie as well. Here are just a few: Agent Smecker: Brilliant! So now we've got a 'huge guy' theory and a 'serial crusher' theory. Top notch. What's your name? Detective Greenly: Detective Greenly. Who the f*ck are you...

Books that Shan't be read together

Considering BESM covers anime, and L5R features a pseudo-Japan with samurai, ninja and nasty, nasty demons, I think that could work somehow. Especially since samurai stuff goes really well with anime, if Rurouni Kenshin, Ninja Scroll, and others are any indication.

What's the coolest ranged exotic weapon?

PHB, DMG and MM, presumably. I would go for one of the repeating crossbows myself. Only problem is: since the mag (bolt holder, cassette, whatever) is up at the top of the weapon, I have no clue as to how the hell you're supposed to aim the thing without the mag getting in your way!

where does the line 'today is a good day to die' originate?

Indeed. The "Good Day to Die" maxim has lots of different origins from all over the world. My major recollection of it was that it was a major maxim among the Samurai of Feudal Japan. And "Revenge is a dish best served cold" was a Sicilian proverb, if I recall correctly.

    Combat rounds -- one minute

One minute equals one round in AD&D? Sounds to me like one minute of combat would be more of a sequence than a round -- and even the most inexperienced of characters are going to be delivering (or defending against) a lot more than one attack during that minute, let me tell you. Unless you're...

Burning Shaolin and D20 Modern -- Adding Guns to the Equation

Just took another read through the Burning Shaolin D20 rules for faceless hordes and wuxia-style combat and thought that these would be cool for a D20 Modern game. However, Burning Shaolin is set in the world of period Kung Fu cinema, and the modern day has introduced a new element to HK action...

Go to Hell. Go Directly to Hell. Do Not Pass Go. Do Not Collect 200 Larvae.

I think of hell as a gigantic prison. And if you think about it, it makes a kind of sense -- prison, after all, is where we tend to stick those people that have committed heinous crimes against others in society, but that have either done something not worth death, or that we don't have the...

    What are your favorite weapons?

Give me a good composite longbow and a quiver of arrows any day. For melee, I'll take the old reliable longsword.

    Broad Bladed Short Sword Question

Since I don't have Complete Adventurer, I'm assuming a "broad bladed short sword" is a short sword that deals slashing damage instead of piercing?

    Circus Music?

If you're a Cowboy Bebop fan, you'll want to check out the circus-style music that played when Spike Spiegel threw down against Mad Pierrot in Episode 20 of the anime.

    Creative Exercise - Veragea

It came from the Rinkworks fantasy name generator. The fact that the name just happens to be "average" with one letter moved is purely coincidental. Make of that what you will. As for my contribution: The King of Veragea does not want Torech and Imyth, the two rival countries, to go to war...

    Creative Exercise - Veragea

Since we have some very cool Creative Exercises going on here, I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring. My guidelines and constraints for this particular thread are very much like the ones Joshua Dyal proposed for his Razina setting, but with a few changes of my own: Choose setting elements...
