D&D 5E (2014) How Many Spaces on a Grid Does Cloud of Daggers Effect?

Wait... So let's say your party is in a 20ft hallway, such that width-wise, it covers 4 squares on a grid. They get into combat and the druid wants to cast Web such that it is anchored between the two walls. How would you rule that on the grid-based system? If they choose a wall as a point of...

D&D 5E (2014) How Many Spaces on a Grid Does Cloud of Daggers Effect?

Well, remember that you choose the outward face as the point of origin on a regular cubic AoE. But this spell's specific beats the general of a the point of origin needing to be on the cube face. So it isn't redundant since it changes the way the spell can be chosen on a grid-based combat.

D&D 5E (2014) How Many Spaces on a Grid Does Cloud of Daggers Effect?

The PHB specifically says that when you move while using a grid in combat, you move square-by-square. It doesn't make those same concessions about where you can target, except how a DM might decide AoE's might choose a point of intersection.

D&D 5E (2014) What happens when you fail?

I tell my players what the stakes might be before they roll if they ask. If they really want to know, they can make a wisdom check. I always tell the players the success DC. There is usually a consequence when they roll, the only times when there isn't a consequence is if they're doing something...

    D&D 5E (2014) Perfect spell designs

Oh, yes I agree. At early levels, it has that "wow" factor of rolling more damage dice than almost anything else at that level, but it's expensive and dangerous enough at that level that you need to exercise caution.

Well, now I'm on my soapbox, but I feel like morality isn't a necessary point of discussion. When it comes to recounting the lives of those who lived centuries before us, then the accurate recount as-is should be made and any moral inquiries or disagreements should be left for the audience. If...

    D&D 5E (2014) Perfect spell designs

I think there are a few spells in the PHB that are absolutely perfectly designed, in my opinion. I'm curious if there are others some would like to share and elaborate why they're so great. The spells don't have to be the most powerful, in fact, broken spells are often thought of as poorly...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you define “mother may I” in relation to D&D 5E?

You mean innovative for its time and kept alive by the active community? Oblivion came out 2006, skyrim came out 2011. Regarded as highly competent for their time.

Isn't that just a computer game that can be modded?

Woah, a faucet. I realized I should have used this a long time ago, very shameful that I didn't. If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go ahead and scrub my hands.

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

I can disprove that easily overall concept easily. Here's a thought experiment. A party of two walk into the woods where they face a broken bridge. Going around would take too long. The first character has two options: magically repair the bridge or they can attempt to jump the gap. Unbeknownst...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

There aren't any. At least not in the PHB. However, there are features whose usefulness in a wizard is either minor or downright neglible. Almost none of the half-orc features have incredibly practical uses.

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

A scouting rogue tend to have their odds distinctly in their favor. Especially if they're drow, as they can bring the darkness with them. Same for shadow monks but independent of race. And if they get caught, they have a much better chance of simply neutralizing the scouts than the familiar...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

And why do you think your opinions hold more merit? And the champion fighter is not as simple as a combat-based class can get. It isn't very complex, but it can certainly get simpler. But then your problem isn't the fighter class or the wizard class. You simply don't have your favorite...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

Not necessarily. It's not one-to-one, it's context dependent. Heck, a wizard might be doing something to avoid combat while the fighter might want to actively encourage it. And neither of them "failed." One might be the more optimal solution than the other, but it's simply depends. Or maybe...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

But that's the thing. How would your wizard truly know the familiar isn't the right tool? If all your wizard knows is that the enemy's base is ahead, why wouldn't they do what they always do? It may end up being detrimental, but the wizard might not be able to predict it. But are they better...
