Rat bastard DM or just the norm? Share your stories.

Extremely poor DM. So how did he explain this teleport? *Boom* for no apparent reason you're out in the woods?

    Getting Into the Game

I think the new group could do you a lot of good. I had the same feeling you did about six years ago. I was a player at the time and we'd had the same DM then for going on six years. We jumped from one campaign to another, from one game system to another and were really spinning our wheels. The...

Goals of D&D: Putting Danger to the Sword

Stop right there. If your players are the ones telling you this, stop trying to justify your position. The absolute worst thing a DM can do is shove his game philosophy down his players' throats. A lot of us here have some strong opinions on how D&D/AD&D/OD&D should be played, but when it comes...

Attack of Opportunity -- does it deserve to survive to v.4?

I believe JRR is referencing the 1E Charge rule, but he's misinterpreting it. In 1st Edition the only way to move and attack on the same round is to charge. At the end of your charge you needed to be within 10' of the target in order to attack.

Attack of Opportunity -- does it deserve to survive to v.4?

I'm beginning to wonder if people here actually played the same game I did. From the DMG, page 61: "4. Determine the results of whatever actions are decided upon by the party with initiative: A. Avoid engagement (Flee, slam door, use magic to escape, etc.) if possible. B. Attempt to parley...

Declaring actions at the start of the round...

Tried it with another DM once, hated it. It completely unbalanced initiative to the point where Improved Initiative was a must-have feat. If the character/monster that won initiative wants to react instead of being a first-mover he can delay or hold his action. Having the first-mover advantage...

    Telling a story vs. railroading

You had a very bad storyteller. A standard, by-the-book VtM game is basically "players vs. the railroad". Railroading is ingrained into the game. Under WW canon most young vampires cannot leave the city they inhabit because werewolves would tear them apart. You have to bootlick NPC Elders or...

Attack of Opportunity -- does it deserve to survive to v.4?

Probably. It was meant as exaggeration to make a point which is hard to do on ye olde Net. ;)

Attack of Opportunity -- does it deserve to survive to v.4?

Not meant as an insult. However to me a player spending 10 minutes plotting an intricate tapdance around a map in order to maximize his bonuses and minimize his weaknesses in a supposed wild melee is as irksome as "Mother May I?" may be to you and SR. Instead of "Mother May I" we have the super...

    Telling a story vs. railroading

In fact you're quite mistaken about the players having no idea of the consequences. The players debated at length about getting involved with the Harpers, and were well aware of the ramifications of the letter and pin they found. They had enough smarts to know that an agent for a somewhat good...

Im ready to kill the warmage....

Under normal circumstances talking to the player would probably be best. From the original post though I get the feeling that "Bob" isn't the most mature individual however. What I would do: Write up a monster that totally negates every one of their major abilities. If they have a wand of...

Attack of Opportunity -- does it deserve to survive to v.4?

Oh no - not uncertainty! GOD FORBID we ever put the player in a situation where he has to actually THINK.

    Creating a "module" based campaign

I'm not sure what you're asking here. Most modules in and of themselves are unrelated to each other, so you could simply grab three random modules and have them be different. I run mostly modules, but I also run my own mini-adventures to set up and connect the modules into a coherent campaign...

    Telling a story vs. railroading

Hmmm... but what if player choices resulted in the wizards and minotaurs forcing the players hand? Is that still a railroad? In my new FR campaign the PC's found a dead body in a goblin lair surrounded by dozens of dead goblins. With the body they found a letter addressed to a prominent NPC in...

PC survivability and starting at 1st level

Who says they have to be as competent? IMO most of the problems with character survivability at 1st level could be solved if certain DM's didn't treat every encounter as a chess match.

    Cold-wrought iron

Cold-wrought iron is iron that has been worked "cold", that is without a forge. Pure iron is too soft to hold an edge, and before the advent of steel in order to make them viable weapons they needed to be hammered cold. This made them harder but also more brittle. Generally cold-wrought iron...

At what level do you start your campaigns?

I finally found some players and started a new campaign last week, and the players seemed surprised that we started at level one. Do you start at level one? And if not why not?

Yet Another Lonely-Gamer Thread UPDATE 7-8!!!!

Sorry to hear it went badly. However, I am glad for you that you got some closure. I'm not sure if it's a good idea for you to stay close with this girl, at least in the short run. Take some time away and clear your head because I don't think you're out of the woods yet. Once she sees you're...

    Treasure and leveling comparisons: AD&D1, B/ED&D, and D&D3 - updated 11-17-08 (Q1)

Interesting data, but not really surprising. IME the main three variants from 1st ed AD&D "by the book" campaign modules to homebrew adventures were: 1. No xp for gold 2. Reduced treasure handed out. 3. More "realistic" treasure - i.e. no Gem of Seeing inside an Ankheg gizzard, no orc...
