    Trying to foil a PC

Competent spellcasters backed up by good melee, with healing support. In other words to show him what a team can do - throw a well-oiled team at him. No need to make them uber powerful - a well-timed Hold Person spell can be more devastating than a 10d6 fireball.

DM's, Do your PCs realize there are Bigger Fish?

Honestly I've never experienced that in my games. Maybe I've just been lucky but the players I've DM'ed for had the common sense to know that level one = weaksauce. The one game I have seen that is in World of Warcraft, where every scrub level 5 you run into is the Avatar Of Freaking Awesomeness...

DM's, Do your PCs realize there are Bigger Fish?

In my opinion, DM's who can't bring themselves to let PC's be big fish are a bigger problem.

World of Warcraft killed our gaming group!

I was addicted to WoW for over a year. My gaming group had dissolved due to people moving, getting married, etc and WoW came along at just the right time. The allure is that if you pick an RP server you can find an RP guild and RP with dozens of people over the course of a night, not just the...

Your Favorite RPG Supplement, for any Game, Period

I've never been a compulsive supplement buyer, so my pool of experience is rather limited. My favorites are: 1. The original 1E Temple of Elemental Evil campaign book. Taught me how to tie a dungeon and town site together into a coherent campaign. 2. AD&D FR Cloak & Dagger. Lots of background...

What was your first year of DMing like? Mistakes new DM's can avoid..

I took my first shot DM'ing AD&D 1E long ago, and all of us were inexperienced players at the time. In my first game I filled in for the regular DM and had to handle level 12 characters O.o I put them up against a level 14 evil cleric with a bunch of undead minions. However at the end of the...

Help! My players are spooning apart my campaign!

Adamantine: This ultrahard metal adds to the quality of a weapon or suit of armor. Weapons fashioned from adamantine have a natural ability to bypass hardness when sundering weapons or attacking objects, ignoring hardness less than 20. Last I heard spoons and corkscrews are not weapons. Also...

Does your setting have Magic Shops

Yes, to an extent. Capital cities usually have a shop or two where a powerful wizard might sell some oddities he's collected (usually minor, perhaps a few medium). Of course, they've never been used and cursed items do exist so caveat emptor. Large towns will have an apothecary selling...

    What alignment is House?

Hmmm... I disagree. Simply because his whole life does not revolve around disputing authority does not mean he is not chaotic. One can be chaotic without going out every day and protesting the government. Also you argue that science is the law and organization that House follows, as if he has...

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

Sig as well. I'm notoriously hard on paladins, simply because they are my favorite class. That being said, I would allow this character and probably give you extra xp for an original and refreshing viewpoint. I may even shamelessly steal the idea when I play next ;) The reason I love this...

Player schticks that grind your gears

One of the weirdest experiences I've had with a player was when one of the regulars brought a new player into the game. The guy brought a laptop filled with almost every reference book on PDF. He rolled up his character (a ranger, incidentally) no problem. Knew all the feats and what they did...

Yet Another Lonely-Gamer Thread UPDATE 7-8!!!!

Teflon Billy put it right, as did others here. If I may be so bold as to lay down the skinny on what is happening here, I'll do so from my 38 years of experience on this rock, and this might be a little blunt so forgives me: She likes you. She cares about you. She doesn't find you repulsive...

    Thinking Too Hard About Fantasy

The amount of fun to be had in a particular game world is inversely proportional to the amount of real world knowledge you bring into it. Quit being a muggle. :D

What does a DM owe his players?/ Are the rules written in stone?

Agreed, and part of significance is laying the groundwork in the campaign for such magic. In my experience, trying to come up with a legendary backstory for every magic item the PC's obtain is counterproductive. To paraphrase Freud, sometimes a +1 sword is just a +1 sword. Yes, finding Sir...

    Is this paladin in trouble?

THere's the Holy Liberator PrC, which is basically a chaotic good paladin. If I were in your position I would ask the player if they would like to switch. Perhaps Lane's superiors (or deity) realize she isn't suited for the demanding path of the paladin but yet don't want to lose her totally...

Player schticks that grind your gears

The Storyteller This player takes up valuable game time with endless tales about his old gaming group, none of whom are in attendance at the table. The stories are usually lame and/or improbable, and no one really cares, however in order to be nice to the player the group usually grins and...

Player schticks that grind your gears

Ok, here's the companion thread. 1. The mouse in the castle syndrome- This one is common in games like Champions or Gurps with extensive player choices for character creation. The group Powergamer has constructed yet another masterpiece of synergy and efficiency, and he cannot wait to...

DM Schticks That Grind Your Gears

Like I said there's room for conflict and bickering. Fistfights are ok. Rivalries and heck even an occasional honorable duel is fine. "When I take my watch I go over to the sleeping paladin and slit his throat" is not. The times I've had to deal with this sort of crap is with a few people who...

DM Schticks That Grind Your Gears

Hmmm ok I misunderstood. Yeah, I've seen this too and it can get a bit tiresome. All it takes is a bit of effort on both the DM and the players on formulating a coherent background. But if the DM is lazy and either doesn't give the players enough to work with or just handwaves it away it can grate.

DM Schticks That Grind Your Gears

And just what is the DM supposed to do, run two different games for the fractured group? Edit - Lanefan beat me to it. When I run it's one game a week, so the characters must work together or else. To me part of the DM job description is ensuring fun for the group as a whole. If...
