Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

Well, in these cases they are already starting to ship, and in the case of the Cosmere specifically they have 5 years if R&D funding now.

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

Yeah, if success is measured by "active support", then Draw Steel, Daggerheart, and the Cosmere RPG are in good shape as their companies all have multi-year aggressive product release plans including supplements and adventures, in addition to Open Gaming support.

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

They have said in some interview that the goal is for the different suburban to be modular, so wave cave can be a quick oneshot or run together for a longer session.

    Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart

That is one of the more interesting things about Daggerheart to me, it is oke of the first significant systems that seems to be occupying the same range of complexity and flexibility that 2014 D&D does: most other systems seem to ne going for being more rules crunchy, or less rules crunchy, or...

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

Right, not that the Adventures are one page adventures, but it seems that they use the economy of space approach like woth Dragon Delves.

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

Google suggests that Lost Mines is expected to take 20-40 hours officially. One thing to consider, ia that it seems that this box set is using the DMG truncated adventure prep information format, whereas Phandelver is a more old school descriptive style, and had a significant Bestiary that this...

Fewer than 500,000! I made a character on Demiplane out of curiosity, and I have no plans to buy it in the future even, doubt I am alone. And I am sure tons of people made multiples. There is also the situation where often only a DM buys the actual book, and players juat show up with snacks and...

    Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart

500,000 Daggerheart characters created on Demiplane in just 2025, as of Gencon, compared to the normal 6 million new characters a year on Beyond (based on some Google Fu, technically 8%). Not saying either relates to sales in any direct measure, obviously, but it does suggest a lot of attention...

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

Three 16 page booklets (one for Social stuff st the Keep, one for wilderness exploration in the Borderlands, and one for dungeon crawling in the Caves of Chaos), it does sound like it eoukd take multiple sessions to play through it but I imagine we will need some time to compare directly to...

Oh, he could. It is definitely a conscious decision, a very sad and cynical one.

I really enjoyed some of his earlier videos. Unfortunately, the toxic cycle of YouTune rewarding clickbait is a hard vortex to escape once it gets going...

Realistically, I'd be more than happy to play either if they were on offer (I even played Shadowrun for friendship's sake, so...), even if I am not in the mood to invest myself at the moment.

Seems pretty easy to pick up, though it may take the d20 chasis the opposite direction to your personal tastes IIRC.

Didn't say anything about scarcity: all that tells us is that sales surpassed business projections. Daggerheart getting like 10% of the engagement qith the online tools that D&D Beyond gets? That says a lot of people have been axrively tomkering with the rules. They literally juat started...

    Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart

Right, thstwhat I'm saying: not that other ganes are less good (I have little to no opinions on Daggerheart as a game yet, haven't seen enough), or unsuccessful...but Daggerheart IMO represents a rather novel phenomenon in TTRPG history with fairly few direct parallels...in some key aspects...

    Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart

Right, which is why I referred to more concrete numbers, like Shadowdarks very nice Kickstarter numbers and Daggerheart's frankly astonishing Demiplane engagement.

    Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart

Yeah, I think not just the potential is higher, it seems to me that Daggerheart may already have reached a very rare height for TTRPGs. Shadowdark is very successful, people are making a living off of it...but I don't see the same level of awareness outside of hobbyist spaces.

    Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart

I'm not particularly into either game, have no intention of picking up either or playing in either. I'm not saying anything against Shadowdark, but Convention play is one thing...I am seeing way, way more about Daggerheart in the broader culture than Shadowdark. Like, people I know IRL off-line...

    Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart

Fair, I'm basing it off of tge 500,000 characters created in Demiplane as of GenCon. Obviously tge game hasn't sold 500,000 copies...but the interest level us a different magnitude. I'm just saying, it is a category mistake to say that Daggerheart looks like a Shadowdark level success. It is a...

    Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart

That Daggerheart is experiencimg a bigger cultural moment than Shadowdark? I do feel comfortable making that claim, though you are right that the Kickstarter limits are not the limit of who plays Shadowdark, it does indicate that it is a different size category of success.
