    Skill Challenges: Please stop

Sure I'd agree with that. And generally I'd say you can't force an SC on them with good results. It's got to be an objective they want to take on. And good SCs should make it possible for everyone to contribute. That's part of why I prefer to put it to the players and determine success on...

    Skill Challenges: Please stop

That might depend on who's involved and how's it's presented. If you present and open-ended situation with an objective... Doesn't it become creative problem solving? There's a third option and I think part of the problem is that you don't see that option. Create a scenario with an...

    Skill Challenges: Please stop

OK so in your opinion we shouldn't have RPed that through? That's fine if it works for your group. My group were enjoying the problem solving and the RP. We kept playing it through well past that. There were a few other checks at those later points too. Where did I indicate I gave them any...

    Skill Challenges: Please stop

Interesting. My group once decided they wanted to scale a cliff, get around anticipated enemies and attack them from behind. This became a little adhoc (complexity 1) skill challenge. Group: Bugbear Ranger, Dwarf Paladin, Eladrin Sorcerer and Human Cleric So who had all the cool skillz for...

    XP Levels Revealed!

Thanks Scott... Yep 202xp == Giant Two Headed Troll! We already knew it but... Re-confirmed.

    Skill Challenges: Please stop

Well the last two posts simply confirm my belief that SCs where the mechanic is out in front of everyone are rarely enjoyable. Use it as an accounting mechanic... The player's don't know it's there... It doesn't force anything... RP is more important... Bingo! Winner!

    Conflicting Skill Challenge?

Conflict leads to interesting story! Do some of the PCs have reason to oppose the DBs actions?

Glad I didn't disappoint :D I believe that the value in the SC mechanic is on the DMs side, not the players side. I believe the strength in SCs is in how they define and objective and allow you to determine whether it is achieved. I think if you play with that strength then SCs can be...

Encounters for a 2 person party

OK it looks like there's a lot of wisdom in this thread and I dont have time to read it all today :( My immediate gut reaction is - brutes and artillery in masterplan. That should get you very close to the right level of challenge for your 2 person party. Please do realize that I haven't...

    Skill Challenges: Please stop

OK now I've skipped a whole pile of :):):):) because it's the weekend here and I have to work overtime tonight (yeah I start 2am on a Sat->Sun night lucky me). If I get something out of context please do let me know and please do try to assume it's because of that skipping. KarinsDad I say if...

Check out the "D&D black belt thread". It's not going to give you all the answers... Yet. But I think it'll give you some leads on where to find them. How long do you have until game night 0?

The items you've listed for SCs are good. I'd also add these: The pros and cons of hidden and announced SCs Thought processes for designing SCs SCs as a "tracking and accounting" mechanic SCs: More than just skills! Yeah stalker0's system is interesting, another alternative SC system was...

Could be they tend to use visible challenges too. If it's narration and interaction and it's broken up by an encounter or four on the way that's quite a different kettle of fish to "rolling 24 skill checks". LOL! Yup! Me too! Just like you I wised up fairly quickly tho.

    Skill Challenges: Please stop

I wasn't talking about a particular challenge and especially not yours. From what I've seen yours go out of their way to ensure failure and success are both meaningful in some form - whether relatively immediate or more long term. I applaud this. My concern is that a lot of SCs seem to go...

    Skill Challenges: Please stop

Yeah I know the type and I agree. Cut my teeth on the game with some of them in 81. Hell one of those guys now runs the local game store and we reminisce about the day when I'm there. I said encourage, not force. And you know what? You can still ask how they try to intimidate or whatever...

    Skill Challenges: Please stop

Dannyalcatraz Sorry but I disagree here. IMHO it's the DMs repsonsibility to encourage roleplaying. And IMHO that'[s relative to each player's experience and ability. My current group has some very strong roleplayers and some very new roleplayers. I don't expect the latter to RP out every...

Nah an article on aussie gamers would just shame the rest of the world ;) And I have no idea what this has to do with 4e :) We seem to have drifted OT :D In an effort to get back On Topic I'd be happy to contribute in the areas of Skill Challenges (IMHO the single area where folks need the...
