Mmm... They'll need to be dynamic forms then, since the targets change with the target CR.

I'd be happy to front up for a Q&A or something... I could do an article or two as well. Just keep in mind I have a fairly heavy commitment with the next 2-3 blog posts I have in the current series... and working full time IRL!

Well I am already writing articles on this so... lol

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Well I don't have the Monster Manual yet and noone has leaked a spolier of the Unicorn to me yet. So I can't comment specifically on that creature. I have looked into Legendary Creatures already though and I can comment on them in general. Legendary Creature is basically a template that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Sort of! I mean the math is definitely there, it's just undocumented and has some pretty broad parameters. I think that's intentional to facilitate the return of "monster building as artform" and it does give monster designers a lot of leeway in design. But that comes at a cost. I remember a...

You are welcome! I'm glad some of the community has found it interesting. I know and I am sorry for the delay. Thing is it already pretty long and I have hours of work left, then I need to polish it for posting. So I figured I'd have to post it separately... :-( I'm working pretty hard to get...

Just posted Part 6: Construction: Traits & Spellcasting but I just could not fit Damage in... So I am working my rear end off to get it polished and up in it's own installment...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Kind of! What I mean is AC and to-hit do scale somewhat with CR, more-so to-hit than AC. Those two seem to form their own axis in the system. The more significant axis in the system is the health/damage axis, which scales much faster. Those two axis don't seem to have the significant...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Thanks to Bounded Accuracy it looks like "to hit" values have been somewhat decoupled and don't seem to factor into Damage any more.

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

I can model CR0 through CR20 pretty easy with a moderately complex polynomial. It gets a lot harder after CR20. It can be done, but it's not slick. I believe they've spliced together three formulae... <CR1: Simply derived from the level 1 PC profile. CR1 - CR20: Derived from the PC profile of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

From my perspective it's the splicing together of 3 distinctly separate curves.

Yeah Savage Wombat it is a bit messed up, as I mentioned already. They seems to have spliced three different curves together. I'll probably re-engineer it at some stage, but not in the short term.

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Sounds right to me Quickleaf My own theory is that they are there to make players, newer DMs and folks from other edition feel comfortable that monsters have some kind of level mechanic governing their HP. But that doesn't seem to actually be the case. I wonder what the DMG will show in this...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Just like the Jester said not about HD, it's about HP. HD and Con bonus are just the way you get there. Or one of the ways. For example the Torll's Regeneration trait seems to factor into their HP count for the purposes of evaluating CR.

I know this is late... my apologies! I spent a couple days extra on HP and then got an awful cold :-( Been pretty crook! But at least Interlude: A Bunch Of Monsters! is now up.

That'll be Traits and Actions :-) I'll try to cover most of Damage in Traits and any remainder plus Accuracy in Actions.

the Jester Well all I can share with you right this second is "the plan"... The "review & stocktake" post very early next week Traits later in the week Actions very early the following week. Summary late that week (including a link to my spreadsheet) That help??

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

It's damage is already very low and it has to give up damage on a Claw attack to grab so that it can Bite. That's really not optimal. The best case I can see for it's damage is that it has a willing victim so it can Claw and Bite with it's Multiattack. That barely gives it raw damage of 21. Very...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

And as far as I can see they aren't... The big problem I see with the way 5e is doing things is it's actually too loose, it's too much about "the art" and "the rule of sense". And, as always, that results in some critters within the same CR that are very swingy. The Vampire Spawn is a weak...
