    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Using Traits as a dial for CR can be fraught with danger as many traits are very difficult to enumerate in terms of HP or Damage. 5e pretty obviously has template-oriented monster of the system so we can expect to see templates coming out at some stage, probably in the near future (I'm tipping...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

OK we went from 33 critters to 209 in about a week. So next post will be a little stocktake/review to check for corrections, mistakes, etc :-) Shouldn't delay the rest of the series by more than a few days... I hope! *gulp*

D&D 5E (2014) No update to Basic today?

I can't confirm that I have seen it. But I believe I did receive an alpha copy of these... But I am still waiting for my PHB at the moment. None of my minions have come forth on this yet... Anyone interested in becoming a minion for a benevolent overlord should PM me on here :-P I quite enjoy...

As you might have guessed DPR matters very little to me :-) If you spend the time to break down monster and PC progression in a spreadsheet (I have sunk hundreds of hours into this) you'll see that the decoupling is pretty effective from a monster perspective. All you really need to do is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beyond 20th level - 5Epic?

And now you have worked it out... Dammit! ;-) Well I guess I embarked on this whole thing so I could develop some kind of understanding based on data. And I staretd sharing it in the hope others could benefit from it. It's changed a bit over time... Hopefully to be more immediately useful to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beyond 20th level - 5Epic?

Truename... compelling me... to enter... this... thread.... Definately not disagreeing, just hoping to clarify a little :-D The data so far suggests to me that we'll see creatures up to at least CR25 in the Monster Manual and so PCs should be able to challenge them, though it may press them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Chaladin

My truename... I hear it! My analysis in the playtest showed that Bounded Accuracy has effectively decoupled accuracy from damage. In DPR calculations for PCs you'll still use it because hey a small improvement is still an improvement, right? But it's effectively decoupled and the charop peeps...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Yeah it's nice. Of course the massive damage from the deity and the ocean of hitpoints... Well the poor level 1 PCs won't stand much of a chance lol I'd agree with that. Something I particularly like is that it's very much brought the art back into making monsters, while still having a sound...

Thanks for the heads up. All fixed now!

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Well thanks for the positive feedback on that! I'm glad some folks appreciated it :-) It's a bit fuzzy right now since we are below CR10 and working on projections but it looks like almost definitely after CR25. What was frustrating for me in the CR analysis was the many wide bands and blurred...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Thanks @Quickleaf and @nnms! I just posted Part 3: Construction: CR & Size. Hope it's of some use. Give me a few days and I'll get Ability Scores & HP posted too.

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

It was entirely an error on my part :-) I mis-rememberred the tier change. I put it in for the sake of transparency - to highlight that I make errors ;-) Actually I think I'll go and edit in that clarification so thanks for the pointing it out!

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Nope! Like I said this is purely about raw damage. I believe accuracy has been decoupled from damage at this level in the design and moved over to Bounded Accuracy, as with the last packet in the open playtest.

Thanks! if anyone is interested in what the delay means you can see part of it in my Profiling Class Damage & Hitpoint Curves... on the WotC forums. But feel free to post back on here instead!

    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Noted! A quick update... I have completely stalled on the articles because I am breaking down CR. I had thought I could work around it but it's proving more foundational to monsters than anticipated... I figure I may as well bite the bullet now. On the downside this means the next post...

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's some 5E monsters

Either way I think both are either quirky design decisions or errors. But both seem like good examples that the build methods are guidelines and that a small proportion of creatures can be tweaked outside those guidelines but still fall within CR.

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's some 5E monsters

I've generally been going with average max and attribute and average attribute by HD/CR. It's working out very well in my analysis and I've estimated what I believe it'll look like in the MM. But time will tell. Well the fact that CR is always used in the comparison to PC level is a huge clue...

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's some 5E monsters

Not exactly. It's also clearly spelled out in the <i>Basic D&D</i> PDF. The thing is I don't think CR is actually a building block in the process-oriented approach. I believe that it's more something used to evaluate a creature. I think "intended CR" is, in a manner of speaking, a factor. But...
