Issues with Social Skills: Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate

What I was trying to say has to do with plot and is pretty similar to the "guards" example you laid out yourself. Figuring out to climb with a rope does not require any wisdom or intelligence. A high wisdom character could have a clue of what may be waiting for the characters at the top or the...

Issues with Social Skills: Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate

It depends on the situation but generally a low stat character will have either a bigger price to pay or less benefits than a higher stat one. For example in 2e D&D there was a social encounter table (friendliness-unfriendliness) regarding NPCs based on charisma. Same with spells. A higher...

Issues with Social Skills: Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate

I think, especially regarding puzzles, low stats are to be taken into consideration by the DM and not the player. If a player has high wisdom he can figure out how to gain more out of the solution of the puzzle by perhaps approaching the puzzle a different way.

Subjectivity, Objectivity, and One True Wayism in RPGs

Within the realm of any of the languages we have today there is no absolute objectivity apart from this premise. This was touched by Aristotle: "The only thing I know for sure is that I do not know for sure." This does not mean that language is faulty. It just demonstrates our recognition for...

A problem with new school as of 3.x and later. Or is it a problem?

Nevertheless we can make some comparative observations that hold some ground. Besides game design is based on this priniciple. Game reviews are based on this principle.

A problem with new school as of 3.x and later. Or is it a problem?

I do not think that this is something different from what I am trying to say here. If for example we think of the problem that there is no way to be able to consider each game feat as prerequisite or something you could have to deal with on the different challenges of the campaign we would not...

A problem with new school as of 3.x and later. Or is it a problem?

When I speak of adventures I do not mean it from a DM's point of view only but rather of everybody players included. When a player has to think what next feat or skill should he take rather just where he may find a sword or the money to buy one, the feeling and outcome is somewhat different. And...

A problem with new school as of 3.x and later. Or is it a problem?

What do you think is better and why? A game with a focus on choice of character building options or a game with a focus on game options? I see these as two different paths in game design. Old school D&D was more of the later, new school more of the former. Gameplay is different as practically...

The thing I miss most from AD&D is...

Adventurers are armed groups, brought together to face monsters and bandits in their perilous quests. Their tactics are highly sophisticated and need training so they can master the necessary team work. But when they face actual threats, this is where they can really understand the value of...

Pathfinder 1E Things you Think WoTC should follow from Paizo

The problem I see with Gurps is that it is bogged down with "isms" for the general public and when it comes to the established gamers, the source -read: the specialized D&Dlike game for their preferred genre and style- remains a better fit. The stats and the system Gurps uses are a modified...

No 5e threads for now, please

I am not sure but I think Blizzard is doing something like this with fanart. Also Bioware did what you are talking about with the NWN modding community and as with Dragon Age, the successor of NWN, a huge part of their business plan lies in developing the modding community and managing quality...

Have the PCs buy with gold their level progression at training grounds or something. Might&Magic world of Xeen used this idea.

    Oh, those hilarious Evony ads...

So it seems to be an acknowledged problem for the government of PRC. I was not aware of that. Thanks for the info.

Pathfinder 1E Things you Think WoTC should follow from Paizo

The way I see it, they need to make a game optimized on the basic premise of a group of players that each one is controlling a unique human character within a group that faces a challenging world of adventure, without any "isms" and baggage: let the "isms" be possibilities of the building of...

Pathfinder 1E Things you Think WoTC should follow from Paizo

Oh, I totally agree on this risk and this is what I was advocating against - although you seem to have misunderstood me (in fact what I said was that "I doubt it is untrue that geeks can be served by a more classic game, a game made to have a long standing presence in time")- but I think the...

Pathfinder 1E Things you Think WoTC should follow from Paizo

Wotc should be the exact opposite of Paizo. Paizo is trying to thrive on developing existing loyal fan bases, Wotc OTOH should try to open and reach to as much of the market as possible. Since Wotc is the only company that has market exposure, exposure alone does not help. It must create the...

    Oh, those hilarious Evony ads...

A phrase from the article: To me this article sounds a bit racist. The advertisements are annoying but the tone of the article is non the less the same.

All of the living industries have static power. Food industry, entertainment industry etch all are static in the big picture. As of relevant entertainment products, sports for example remain mostly the same. Board games, that are more close to tabletop rpgs have various examples from Monopoly to...

another rpg industry doomsday article (merged: all 3 "Mishler Rant" threads)

I think you have been misunderstanding what I am saying. 4e may be performing as to reach the biggest success levels Wotc has put. I am not saying it is failing here. I am saying that the borrowed time of reinventing D&D so to keep it a commercial success in the gaming community has been running...

another rpg industry doomsday article (merged: all 3 "Mishler Rant" threads)

Prior to the OGL, TSR had been trying to expand the versatility of D&D by creating various settings. As D&D was going ahead in a developing market it had to develop versatility if it wanted to remain ahead of competition and stay afloat. TSR in the end failed. Having reached considerably big...
