Do monsters/NPCs really need to roll any dice?

Ouch. First of all, it has to do with immersion because the idea of not rolling for monsters could create to some people the sensation of a possibility of lack of immersion. People would right away have a problem with the premise but said problem might not hold. I thought that this was so...

Do monsters/NPCs really need to roll any dice?

But how is this any true? The players have random elements regarding their characters. The DM has the random elements regarding the rest of the world or the adventure since the results of PC actions are highly connected to this. It is not like the DM, when is preparing or running an adventure...

Do monsters/NPCs really need to roll any dice?

    1. This is the point. You do not have to roll for both PCs and monster, you can make just one roll against a target number. If it hits or higher side A wins, if it rolls lower than the tn side B wins. You adjust the tn based on the balance of forces or advantage of one side versus the other. 2...

Do monsters/NPCs really need to roll any dice?

The goal behind this idea is to change the number of rolls to speed up play. I believe you could design combat as it stands now with less rolls if you accept the fact that only PCs roll dice. Of course rules would have to change but character options and gameplay could remain the same, only...

Do monsters/NPCs really need to roll any dice?

I could buy into this if I had never played any video game or runned an application that rolls dice for you. The thrill I am talking about is not about the physical manuality of rolling the dice but of tying the tension of the unknown to the chances you are aware of.

Do monsters/NPCs really need to roll any dice?

Think of the initiative roll. The player does not know who goes first but he knows that as some point he has to roll and find out by this roll. It makes sense. Same about the unknown risks. To make it more clear: similarly as with the phases of combat in D&D (initiative phase, player turn phase...

Do monsters/NPCs really need to roll any dice?

Yeah, I know. But I felt it was accurate to use it as an example to serve my purpose, ie make people understand what I am trying to talk about.

Do monsters/NPCs really need to roll any dice?

I pose the question in general, which includes D&D.

Do monsters/NPCs really need to roll any dice?

Why? If you faced a monster -not that it is going to happen, but lets play pretend- you would still feel the action or what is happening regarding the monster or the NPC through yourself. And since the game is about your PC, you controlling your PC it makes sense you make the roll.

Do monsters/NPCs really need to roll any dice?

A valid point. But should the DM be someone who runs an adventure for the PCs or one that plays against the PCs and thus the thrill of rolling dice for his monsters? Btw, the game will still be under the same randomness as it was before.

Do monsters/NPCs really need to roll any dice?

Exactly. My intention was to speed up play- Both? The DM? We can figure this out. This was just an example. How fighting works is a matter of design. I just want to see people's reactions to a new model that tries to speed up things while retaining the same functional possibilities. It is a...

Do monsters/NPCs really need to roll any dice?

A fight could be exactly like it is now. Each roll should be significant which means that should come after the choice of some option (except perhaps the roll of damage which comes after the result of some previous roll). The information that you have now in a combat (ie monster actions...

Do monsters/NPCs really need to roll any dice?

In old school design the DM used random events behind his screen to decide the course of the adventure. Random tables, random treasure, random number of monsters and all that stuff. I believe it was in the same philosophy that NPCs rolled their reactions and monsters rolled their attacks and...

As long as we are talking hypothetically...

I am not sure about this. 4e tabletop for example was marketed on the crpg front. Sites like gamespy carried articles on 4e. These people have noted the tabletop. They know about the existence and the fan base of tabletop D&D and thus they make the connection to the D&D merchandise -I would dare...

As long as we are talking hypothetically...

I am of a totally different opinion. I believe the more 4e goes on the harder will be to make new interesting things cause it was designed to be a focused and balanced game around a strictly limited arena of gameplay. I mean gameplay wont change much unless you are so much into mechanics that...

As long as we are talking hypothetically...

I do not think you can make such a comparison. The markets are totally different. Well this mind set does not help the discussion. Speculation is speculation but it does not need to be baseless. Attributing motives to arguments on a speculative discussion does not help.

As long as we are talking hypothetically...

OTOH I was thinking exactly this regarding your 8-10 years of life time of 4e. I would rather put that in 5 years. As far as how Pathfinder goes it has as much to do with the numbers of loyal fans as the cash these loyal fans are willing to give. Plus the production costs or what have you...
