Why *Dont* you like Forgotten Realms?

I'm finding the reasons for not liking the Realms interesting. Some don't like it because there's too much of a metaplot - others don't like it because it doesn't have a unifying theme. There seems to be a tension between these claims. I'm surprised that this isn't being debated. I have some...

Why *Dont* you like Forgotten Realms?

Dragon Magazine #54 (Oct. '81), "Down-to-Earth Divinity", by Ed Greenwood. He describes how he made up his pantheon based on deities from Deities & Demigods. (Incidentally, he also appeals to Elminster the Sage, and mentions using a "Godswar" in which some gods are killed, others stripped of...

    Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder beholder

IIRC, I've read that Rob Kuntz came up with the beholder, while DMing for the Greyhawk campaign.

    3.5 better for world building?

You're missing two things. First, it has been pointed out that 3e and 4e do things differently. Creating new classes is easier in one, creating new monsters is easier in the other. Second, the details you like to tinker with as you create your world could determine which edition you prefer...

4e/WotC: Pro- or Anti- why do you care?

Azgulor - I just wanted to say that I think you asked a good question. I didn't read you as attacking those threads, but as expressing genuine curiosity about them. I'm interested in knowing why people choose which edition(s) to play, and I sometimes like to express my own reasons, but, like...

Netbook: The Book of Forbidden Lore

I just discovered this (from a link in another thread). This is fabulous! I thought it deserved a bump, so others who missed it have a chance to check out these monsters.

Are Casters 'still' way better than noncasters after level 6?

This, right here, is all important. The problems that high level adventurers face should not be the sort of thing solved by killing the bad guy. The PCs should be facing vast armies, dealing with huge natural (or supernatural) disasters, trying to find ways to fool the gods, trying to find ways...

Are you in the RPG closet?

I've never mentioned it to my students, although I believe a friend of mine has (we're college instructors, so the context is a little different than yours). I have, however, once revealed that I read fantasy (and that I favour Conan over LotR), and the only response I got (from one of the best...

You don't play 4E, but what did they get RIGHT?

There are two main things I quite like about 4e: 1. Spells that can be cast at will. 2. Sticky fighters. There are a couple of other things I like, but they come with drawbacks: 3. Rogues that are designed for combat. (The problem is that I also like the idea of a thief who doesn't focus on...

Are you in the RPG closet?

I'm out about it. My family and my wife's family know about. I've mentioned it to several colleagues, and I sometimes have RPG-related material on my desk. Some colleagues chuckle, some find it interesting even if it's not their thing, and others smile and say they used to play. Most of the...

I want to try Castles & Crusades. What hacks are out there for it?

I've come across this before, great work! Is your Unearthed Arcana still unfinished, or is it done at this point?

I want to try Castles & Crusades. What hacks are out there for it?

That would depend the details of these spells. One option, which is used in Pathfinder, is to let all the spellcasters prepare their normal allotment of 0-level spells, then cast those spells at will. You may want to go through the spell lists and make sure that this wouldn't unbalance anything...

    3.5 better for world building?

Great distinction! When I build my own settings (or try to make a published setting my own), I fiddle with the rules to make them fit just right. For example, when I want to emphasize the Law/Chaos conflict and largely ignore Good/Evil, I modify the paladin's abilities to make her Smite Chaos...

Bastard Sword and Furious Focus (APG)

From what you quoted, I'd say that you need to be using the weapon with two hands. Since the fighter is using the weapon in one hand, he is using it as a one-handed weapon, so the feat would not apply.

    3.5 better for world building?

Both systems allow for world-building. I think that 3.5 allows for a wider range of worlds to be built more easily. At the very least, I have an easier time setting up my own worlds (a variety of them) using 3.5/PF than I do using 4e. Having said that, I think there are at least some worlds that...

Is full casting full casting, or is arcane > divine?

Has anyone ever actually played (or seen someone else play) a cleric with a poor melee build (light or no armour, low Strength score, etc.) that still held its own against the wizard? With some people saying that the spell lists are par and others denying it, it would be nice to get some...

Hm. I'd love to play both Dragon Warriors and Dragon Age, but haven't had a chance to.

That's a good question - if it's changed enough, is it still Greyhawk? If it isn't, then is there a point to "updating" it?
