    Is Greyhawk Relevant?

Agreed. What Greyhawk needs is someone with an appreciation of class sword & sorcery to bring out these aspects. Those familiar with Gygax's original presentation of the setting will note that the threat of war was in the air. Perhaps it could be reset to beginning of the Greyhawk Wars, and the...

A subtle reminder from wizards.(or not so subtle)

Thanks, Aegeri. Rather than simply get upset at the fact that I offered a criticism, you actually took the time to explain the issue at hand. I understand your point now.

So they did use math, but got the math wrong. Great. Guesswork does not entail making blind guesses. You try things out, see how they work, modify, try them out again, etc. That's how things have been done all along, implying there was nothing new here.

A subtle reminder from wizards.(or not so subtle)

So you're saying that they're using a dishonest tactic. Fabulous. Something really bothers me about this. Weren't they supposed to have broken down the math of the game and then reconstructed it so that none of this would have been an issue? Is it still guesswork after all?

That, I believe, is the issue. And if that is indeed the issue, then the fact that WotC and others repeat it won't be helpful.

    The Decade's Best D20/OGL

A "best of" compilation is a good suggestion. Personally, I'd be more interested in such a product if everything was converted to Pathfinder (just as the Dragon Compendium that Paizo published converted classic articles from Dragon Magazine to 3.5). Rather than marketing it as a mere...

D&D 4E No more reprints of the 4E core books?

Or maybe some people don't like what WotC is doing/publishing.

What I meant is that I'm not terribly familiar with other writings about Conan by other authors. That's why I wasn't sure if de Camp and Carter's portrayal is as I described. Having said that, it is also nonetheless true that I haven't read any of Howard's non-Conan stories. Instead of picking...

D&D 4E No more reprints of the 4E core books?

There seems to be a common line of reasoning among many (or at least some) of those defending WotC. They point out that the nay-sayers are making wild speculations without evidence (a fair point regarding plenty of nay-sayers). Then they turn around and claim that it will all be okay once WotC...

(Bolded for emphasis.) Oh well, no one's perfect. :p EDIT: Regarding the "popular portrayal", I've heard that this is largely due to Carter and de Camp's editing/revising. Is that so? I've read Howard's original tales, but I'm not terribly familiar with other writings.

Excellent analysis. (I wanted to give you XP, but I apparently need to spread some around first. I guess this isn't the first time I've appreciated what you've posted.) It's been a while since I've read "The Phoenix on the Sword", and now I may be moved to revisit it. It would be interesting to...

Which of these games would you rather play (and why)?

I just wanted to say that I respectfully disagree (although I do agree with some points you've made), but I won't say more as I don't want to have this thread derailed again.

Pathfinder 1E Older material in Pathfinder

I would recommend the same thing for both Pathfinder and 3.5 - don't simply allow all sourcebooks to be used (or even just a range of them). Instead, as the DM, come up with whatever ideas you will for your campaign, and let the players come up with their ideas for their characters. If it occurs...

Which of these games would you rather play (and why)?

I wouldn't call that a degeneration, but I'm glad you've pulled it back on topic. :) This is a very different choice from the one you originally presented. But I enjoy both of these options as well, and still have no preference either way. Indeed. I think there are a number of different...

Which of these games would you rather play (and why)?

If the visceral nature of REH's tales implies that they are not intellectual, then the spiritual nature of JRRT's tales implies that they are even less so. Conan did not typically pursue intellectual matters, but it is not the case that he never considered the meaning of it all. "Let teachers...

Which of these games would you rather play (and why)?

Raven Crowking - Your posts on this topic have been excellent, good analysis of REH and JRRT. This passage that I've just quoted is precisely why I prefer Howard's style to Tolkien's. The Hyborian Age is often judged as more cynical than Middle Earth, I think, because REH merely acknowledged...

[4th ed] Clockwork Horrors now DEMONS? And Neogi...

Yes, I'm familiar with this quip. It's not an argument. At best it's an excuse to ignore legitimate criticism. Plus, it's an ad hominem attack. And here you completely ignore what I wrote in the passage you quoted back. I have nothing more to say to you.

Nifft, your setting (at least this part of it, since I don't know the rest) sounds awesome. I like this much better than a lot of what WotC writes. As I said above, my issue isn't with the particular concepts in themselves, it's with WotC's overall setting flavour (which I find lacking).

Which of these games would you rather play (and why)?

I love a gritty game, but, like you, I wouldn't want to play in the sort of game you describe. While I enjoy playing the anti-hero sometimes, I also like to play the heroic character. It can be very rewarding to bring about good by your own hand, not because the Gods of Good aided you, but...

Which of these games would you rather play (and why)?

I have no preference. But I did not vote "Neither", because I would be quite happy to play in either setting. I was a little surprised at the reasons people gave for not liking option one. When I read it, it did not strike me as necessitating a particular type of game. The PCs could join and...
