D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

As I said - there are the little things that add up. Drop by drop, they weigh down on the "not for me" scale. No perform skill. No crafting skills. No profession skills. Fireball now a daily instead of a staple. Martial powers do not recharge as well as they do in Bot9S, causing a card game...

    Clark Peterson on 4E

Did you read this thread? Did you read the forum? You can't post any critic of any system currently without some self-styled defenders trying to teach you how to "play it right".

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

But I'd not have, I have never said "I move 5 squares". I say "I charge him". And as I said - it's not much, but it adds up. Some patching here, some patching there, all in all it comes up as "not doing it for me". You can post whatever you want, but you can't change this: As 4E is atm, it...

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

Nothing stops me, but it's more work. For me, it feels like going against the stream of the system. All in all, 4E just has too many of those little itches, little bumps to overcome, house rule, override to "do it" for me. Too much "don't think about it" "just call it something else" "just...

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

In 4E too there's the description of the magic missile first, followed by the mechanics. That didn't change, although I agree that the feeling changed. Part of it is, for me, caused by the reason the rules are so clear - the use of one term, and just that term, for everything emphasises the...

    Clark Peterson on 4E

The problem is that for a number of vocal posters, whatever criticism you post in whatever manner with regards to 3E or 4E is understood as "it's crap, and if you like it you are crap too".

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

Your game is not lutes and lyres. The game is more than your game. In my game, perform is one of the most important skills, and performing competitions are a staple.

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

You end up with an encounter where the actual skill at playing an instrument doesn't matter at all. Not something anyone I know would like. Not surprisingly, since you consider playing music "strumming a series of notes in the right order".

4e Has Less Raw Content: Fact!

As a sort of tangent, I miss the design principles or method to create and modify classes. 4E would feel much more complete if we had a robust system to create the classes we want.

    Clark Peterson on 4E

As was mentioned, "Record of Loddoss Wars" is anime, and still the best movie/TV series about D&D ever made. People just need to finally understand that anime is a medium, like comics or movies, not a distinct style. (And all they need is to replace "anime" with "(fill in the one example of an...

    Clark Peterson on 4E

It's not the prof who needs to move on, it's the people he spoke of, jumping on every (imagined) critic of 4E (and 3E) who need to move on, and finally accept that not everyone likes the same things they like.

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

If I'd not type down my campaign chronicle I could run the game with about as close to zero prep time as you metion. Modules would slow me down.

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

I never used minis in an RPG. Minis take me instantly into "strategy game" mode. The bird's eye view, the counting of squares, the way people start moving according to mechanics, going by maps instead description, all that hurts my immersion. I don't see characters, I see pieces on a game board...

4e Has Less Raw Content: Fact!

I prefer the "don't sweat the details when adjusting monsters" way. Works very well in my 3.0E campaign.

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

I spend about one to two hours per game session preparing for it. That includes typing up what happened in the last session. Using modules would slow me down a lot.

    Finished a Story Hour!

I am not sure it qualifies as a story hour, but typing up what happened in a session is part of my preparation work for the next session. That way, my campaign chronicles are always up to date. Although since I only recently - this year - started doing illustrations for my campaign chronicles...

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

Not for everyone. Moving a figure on a grid screams "Boardgame" to me, no matter the characterisation. It simply feels not the same pushing a figure forward and seeing it all from a bird's eye of view instead of imaging the fight, and describing the action. I can understand that others do not...

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

Sometimes though you need that precision 3E gives. If there's a crafting competition, or a bard challenge, if you're trying to outdo the king's cook to gain access to the royal household, etc. etc. then you need to know how much better - or worse - your meal, performance, sword was than the...

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

Good post. The forums would be a far nicer place if people would stop trying to tell people that what they like is stupid, wrong, or both. Some people like craft & profession skills. Some people like shifting enemies accross a grid.
