Does Metaplot ever work? Forked Thread: Greyhawk 4e

I'd say by making small changes in established parts, and introducing new elements/themes by introducing new regions, not by massively changing old, established regions.

    Impact of mechanics on roleplay

So, why have combat rules then? Wouldn't it be better to leave all those delicate decisions how to value some power or spell to the human brain? If combat is not as complicated as social interaction it should be easy to handle. And if combat is more complicated than social itneraction, why can't...

Does Metaplot ever work? Forked Thread: Greyhawk 4e

Another problem is that some metaplots can change the whole setting's theme into something compeltely different - like post-acopalypse, Horror, etc.

Flavour First vs Game First - a comparison

The "large dungeon" itself might have come as flavor after the mechanic (a way to have several smaller fights in the same place) was set.

Flavour First vs Game First - a comparison

Well, I am a lazy DM, and advocate lazy DMing - if done in a smart way, aka "don't waste your time on stuff your game does not need". (Even wrote a blog entry about it.) But it's because I am a lazy DM that I dislike bad modules, too much work to make them work, even more to make them fit the...

Does Metaplot ever work? Forked Thread: Greyhawk 4e I found this thread, "Does Metaplot ever work? Forked Thread: Greyhawk 4e", interesting and have nominated it accordingly for Topic Of The Week 39, September, 2008.

Does Metaplot ever work? Forked Thread: Greyhawk 4e

The failings of authors - who don't get the system very often - are another problem. Even good authors often fail to understand why common fantasy tropes do not work with D&D, or don't understand the setting. If a reader is asking himself "Why don't they just go to a temple and revive/ask the...

    Miniatures and my players

I don't use miniatures. They turn the game too much into a boardgame, in my experience - colored by the Mechwarror roleplaying game though. Too much distance measuring, hex counting, etc. for my taste, and too much of a "bird's eye view". Also, the limits inherent to the system - "two characters...

    Impact of mechanics on roleplay

I agree with Lizard almost fully. "Just add it to the background" is not enough for a game that is more than killing stuff and taking their things. "Don't mary sue" is also not enough of a guide line. And the "It doesn't matter anyway" means "don't play like that". Where is the line between a...

    Let's pronounce "Genasi"

Lichtenstein doesn't get pronounced as "Lick" (as in licking), it has a softer sound, mostly between "sh" and "ck", sort of a soft cough. I pronounce all exotic names like they'd be pronounced in German, unless it's very clear that they are derived from a real language.

Flavour First vs Game First - a comparison

It just seems that most of the "dungeon crawl" adventures are designed in similar "don't let enemies help each other" ways, be it from foes living next to each other to morals that sound like "honor dictates we let our vanguard die" or "we're evilllll, mwahahaha, we like to watch our people die!!!!"

Does Metaplot ever work? Forked Thread: Greyhawk 4e

That's a good point. Many authors, especially novel authors, seem unable to think small, and mistake "world changing!" for "exciting", replacing plot and character and new ideas with trite apocalypses and other "Realm Shaking Events". A bad idea or adventure doesn't get better if it's spread...

Does Metaplot ever work? Forked Thread: Greyhawk 4e

The Shadowrun "Mob War" and "Blood in the board room" plotlines. Both presented lots of small hooks and ideas which I used in my campaign, although I was a bit vague on the outcome of the plots themselves.

Does Metaplot ever work? Forked Thread: Greyhawk 4e

I pick and choose some plot lines from metaplots, but I let player actions define the outcome. This pretty much means that no matter what system I play, after a few years any setting book with metaplot is no more useful than a generic book, or a book from another setting or system since my world...

Does Metaplot ever work? Forked Thread: Greyhawk 4e

Biggest problem I have with metaplots is that they railroad the campaign setting at least with regards to the published material. So, BBEG and his horde take on the civilized countries with support from rebels at the imperial court? Good idea! My players will have a field day dealing with them...

I was "booed" for even showing the 4e Core books

Stop trying to read things into other people's actions posters talk about (i.e. "that's throwing a tantrum"). It's not cool. It's the very attitude of "I am reasonable, my tastes are superiour, this is childish/stupid/whatever" that poisons many threads. Especially if it comes with the double...

I was "booed" for even showing the 4e Core books

It looks like any negative reaction aimed at a game system is taken personally - and in the worst possible light - by its supporters. I do expect that if someone had torn up his 3E character sheet after the 4E game the same people decrying his actions here would have lauded him.

I was "booed" for even showing the 4e Core books

So much intolerance and arrogance. And so much hypocrisy. People aren't even allowed to tear up a character sheet without getting called childish, and worse.
